Marcy Playground was formed in 1996 by John Woznaik, Dylan Keefe. and Shlomi Lavie. John named the band after Marcy Open grade school in Minneapolis that he attended, because many of his songs were inspired by his childhood. They were influenced by David Bowie, Paul Simon, Neil Young, Van Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd, Nirvana, Wham! and the Beatles. Wozniak's songs run in different styles: some are modern folk music; many have undertones reminiscent of children's songs; and then there are the songs with a clear rock sound. After attending college, John moved to east New York to work with Jared Kotler. Jared really liked John’s talent and they put together the money to record a duo at Sabella Recording Studios. Kurt Rosenwikel introduced bassist, Dylan Keefe to John and Marcy Playground began performing in NYC. In 1995, they signed with Capitol recordings and began playing NYC club dates. There were some personal problems between John and Jared that sparked which caused Jared to leave the band and be replaced by a drummer, Dan Rieser. With the success of their hit single, “Sex and Candy”, the band emerged in mainstream. The song remained number 1 for 15 weeks on the billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. The band began to work towards remaining at the top which everyone thought they wouldn’t. Marcy Playground proved everyone wrong and released their not so popular album Shapeshifter. Despite the fact they were shrinking from the spotlight, they still continued to release albums. Paul Leary revealed on Marcy Playgrounds website that Shapeshifter had been written by Leary. His
