Antony, in his eulogy, presented himself as filled with grief and loss; however, a form of subliminal persuasion and manipulation is used to sway the Roman people in his favor. The loyal friend of Caesar appeared to be supportive of the conspirators, but his devotion to the true king never wavered. While he praised the conspirators for being “such honorable men”, Antony admitted how he grieved for his friend. He utilized paralipsis in his cajolery, stating that “I speak not to disprove what Brutus spoke, / But here I am to speak what I do know.”…

Rhetoric, it’s all around us whether we realize it or not. In Act Three of Julius Caesar, Caesar moves to the capitol after refusing Artemidorus’ letter of warning. Shortly after, the conspirators (people who were planning to kill Caesar) stab him to death. Antony flees the scene but Brutus convinces everybody to let him live. Brutus then explains to the people of Rome the meaning of why they had killed Caesar, but what Brutus, the conspirators, and people of Rome don’t know, is that Antony is pretending to be an ally but in reality, plans on striking back with the help of Octavius Caesar.…

Through this the well-beloved Brutus stabbed, And as he plucked his cursed steel away, Mark how the blood of Caesar followed it” (A3S2, line 188-190). Julius Caesar, by William Shakespeare, is about a man who going to be crowned king of Rome and who was loved by all. Brutus and Antony were both effective in trying to win the audiences favor however, Antony used more pathos to connect with the audience’s emotions and Brutus used more of a logos appeal. For example, when Antony read from Caesar’s will about where the money for Rome was supposed to get, he said “ But here’s a parchment with the eal of Caesar (A3S2, L140 P125)”. This was an example of logos because he used a document to present his argument.…

George Robertson`s painting titled Mark Antony`s Oration is a very powerful picture, even if you do not know the backstory to it. The painting is showing spectators what happened after Julius Caesar was stabbed. I believe the intended audience is people that have read Julius Caesar or have knowledge of Caesar`s death. Although it has a big message to people that never read the story too. Robertson`s painting gives off a lot of emotions.…

Introduction: Suetonius and Augustus Suetonius’ approach to biography is elucidated by centring focus on the Life of Augustus. Suetonius rose to prominence as a scholar, and later gained positions in Hadrian’s court, with his work The Twelve Caesars dated tentatively to the reign of Hadrian between 117-38 C.E. He did not write in a chronological style like his contemporary Plutarch, but rather divided his work thematically, into categories such as birth, achievements, career, morals and death, although the structure varied within his work. One of the proposed reasons for this structure is that Suetonius was inspired by Augustus’ Res Gestae. Erik Gunderson argues that Suetonius used Augustus’ Res Gestae as an exempla, while his section on…

The Tragedy of Julius Caesar No matter what the circumstances, people always look for someone to blame. Caesar’s murder results in the plebeians needing to blame someone for what happened. Despite Brutus’s honor and respect among the Romans, Antony gave the more convincing speech at Caesar’s funeral by having an emotional impact on the Romans, therefore proving to them that the conspirators committed an injustice to Rome. Brutus first speaks at Caesar’s funeral with the goal of justifying his actions to the plebeians.…

In Antony’s oration, he argues his case against Brutus by using the rhetorical strategies of Ethos, Pathos and Logos to manipulate his audience to be on his side, rather than Brutus’s side. For this spiritual exercise I wanted to go to the roof and stargaze, but because it was raining, I watched the rain from my room. There were two quotes from Aurelius’s Meditations that I stood out to me when I read it, the first being: “How quickly all things disappear, in the universe the bodies themselves, but in time the remembrance of them” (1). I have always had the desire to leave my mark on the world. I want to go into politics, and specifically, become President of the United States. While I do not believe this will likely happen, it is something I aspire to be.…
