Rubbing Off in the 110 I’ve always been involved with marching band most of my time in school starting in 5th grade. I fell in love with it. I consider marching band an art form. The band marches in many different designs or a patterns on the field while playing music, and for the Marching 110, they perform a dance at the end. For the rubbings project, I wanted to celebrate my time here at Ohio University and give thanks to The Most Exciting Band In The Land.…

In 1968, the Marching Tar Heels of the University of North Carolina (UNC) released a 7-inch 33 ½ rpm record consisting of eight school songs including “Here Comes Carolina,” “Carolina Fight Song,” and UNC’s alma mater “Hark the Sound.” Past UNC students wrote and composed over half of the fight songs featured on the album, and the student marching band performs the same songs today, nearly five decades later. In fact, the band and fans conclude each game with “Hark the Sound,” linking arms and singing the lyrics a UNC student wrote over 100 years ago in 1897. As the “Go Tar Heels!” exhibit exemplifies with this piece, a game is about more than the athletes.…

When people think of marching band, they tend to believe it is a joke or a waste of time. Marching band is a more time consuming activity that starts late in the summer. Yet the people that are not involved in the Fine Arts are more likely to have these false accusations. While most believe marching band is not a sport, is for the unpopular kids, and requires no prior skill, it in fact requires a great deal of time and dedication. A lot of marching bands practice on a daily bases, implying the dedication of skill and physical contribution it takes.…

There’s something amazing about doing what you love and being around other people who share this passion for the activity you’re both involved in; however, this feeling is heightened by being able to teach the basics of the activity and watching others fall in love the way you did. As I enter my senior year this will be my fourth season as a color guard member and my third season as an assistance coach to the Great Bridge Middle School (GBMS) Color Guard. A few weeks before tryouts for marching band my sophomore year, my coaches, Chris and Donny asked for a few volunteers to travel to the three middle schools that filter into Grassfield (Hickory, GBMS and Hugo), and teach the rising ninth graders a few basics, the flag work and dance they needed for tryouts. I decided to help out due to my dedication for color…

Rituals are very reverent and/or traditional aspects of a participant's being, and may help to guide one to their definition of living. Cross country and marching band provide example to this theory of how strongly rituals are strongly involved with how one lives. Cross country is a sport that is designed for anyone besides the weak- to become a true cross country runner, one must love to purposely endure pain for longer than they think they ever believed they could.…

I rewarded the members who had shown the most dedication or improvement during a one week period of rehearsals with a bag containing goodies. This was a tradition for the marching band, one that the past leaders had neglected to follow. I felt that this tradition should not be pushed aside, especially since it helped to encourage success and effort. With this in mind, I gave the section what they wanted. All they looked for was someone to follow and trust.…

In no other sport have they told you to 'take the field'. You should feel the excitement when you hear those words, because this is the only place where you can make the field your own - control it. The field is yours, and you have to use it to tell your story. A marching field to me feels like a safe haven, where I can forget and be pure about who I am. Your story is only as good as you make it.…

Sometimes in life you don’t know what you’ve signed up for. When I volunteered and later was selected as a captain for my sophomore year English class in Mr. Gavino’s annual Battle of the Classes performance, my expectationexpectations for the unit was more of a managerial position. However, several flashpoints on the rollercoaster of Battle showed me the importance of sacrifice, perseverance and leadership. Being a captain for Battle meant that I had to organize and stay afterschool for every leg-killing dance run and every hoarse-voiced script reading. Weekends soon became consumed by making props and backdrops at EV.…

It was a brisk fall evening with the sun just about to set behind a hill. I was 10 years old, playing in my third season of football, and my first ever game under the bright lights surrounding the high school stadium. The time had finally come, the lights had been on and warming up for several minutes, I was going to play a game under the lights on the high school field. My experiences that night were not forgotten, but today I couldn’t even tell you if we won the game that night. The lessons I learned that night weren’t about winning and losing, I had done plenty of that already in my life.…
