Their show’s theme was “Pyramids of Giza”. She ran me through their schedule on competition days. The day of the competition, they would meet at the school around sunrise. After attendance, they would load all their supplies: uniforms, instruments, background props. The band got on the school bus when everything was loaded and secured. Stephanie usually sat with her best friend, Heather, on the bus. Their other friends sat near them and they all talked and joked until they reached the location of the competition. They got dressed in their street clothes then ate, socialized, and watched the other bands perform until it was time for awards. When awards came up, she got emotional remembering the times they placed in the top. Marching band awards are separated into classes based on school size, just like football. There are awards for the top in each class and for best percussion and color guard. “I remember during my senior year [of high school], we didn’t do well at all. All of us seniors were on the field during awards. They called our name in the top, sending us to the state competition. Everyone was so emotional.” When prompted for more, she admitted people were crying and hugging. No one in the band expected to go to the state competition.
