You spin and twirl and play giving ever count every routine of drill your everything. This is marching band, and this is the moment in time that will make or break your team. Being a two year member of the WIlson high school marching band i don’t think people understand just how hard we work. Our dedication goes beyond playing in the stands, pep rallies and parades, and though we love playing “hey baby” and our school's alma mater we are more than a symbol of spirit for a school, we are a highly competitive unit. Marching band is a sport in definition but in practise it is different from other sports, sure we practise about the same amount (9-14 hours a week) but we don’t just walk or run on a field we dance and play music at the same time. Our performance only lasts up to 8 minutes, we do not have the opportunity to wow the crowds for an entire three hour game composed of 9 minute innings. …show more content…

When I saw the flyer for color guard my eighth-grade year I was perplexed as it didn't specify what color guard was other than an exciting activity that lets you be apart of marching band. I was skeptical that I would actually like color guard but at the first clinic, I knew I had found a family and exciting activity to pursue. Watching the upperclassmen toss rifles, sabers, and flags with such ease and confidence made me excited to learn and achieve that level of confidence. This year will be my fourth year in marching band, I am still in Color Guard and it is easily one of the activities I’m most passionate about. My love to perform on the marching field takes away the anxiety I usually have, throughout the years my confidence has risen…

Rubbing Off in the 110 I’ve always been involved with marching band most of my time in school starting in 5th grade. I fell in love with it. I consider marching band an art form. The band marches in many different designs or a patterns on the field while playing music, and for the Marching 110, they perform a dance at the end. For the rubbings project, I wanted to celebrate my time here at Ohio University and give thanks to The Most Exciting Band In The Land.…

The group you are leading may only have a handful of alumni, so you must be prepared to take a bunch of freshman, some who may not even have any marching experience, and make them perfect by the time the season is over. Most people would see that as a challenge, but the true leaders would see that as a challenge they are willing to take one. I love taking on challenges, as I feel it builds character. Over the…

During the course of my senior year, I had to prepare myself and others for marching. The MPB (Mean Purple Band) has a very rich history in the small town of Carrizo Springs. Our marching band had a 29-year streak of receiving 1’s at UIL marching competition. This year we had a chance to turn it into a 30-year streak and I did not want to end my senior year breaking the streak. Being a section leader, I had to attend a camp of some sort hosted by our very own band directors.…

We are expected to practice on our own time and have it ready for the weekly rehearsals. I played and marched in several shows throughout the fall marching season. I also participated in the concert band, which is all the band students and we play higher difficulty music. It’s different because not all band students are in marching band and the woodwinds are given a more important role in the music. Also I was able to join creative writing club as one of the founding members.…

I rewarded the members who had shown the most dedication or improvement during a one week period of rehearsals with a bag containing goodies. This was a tradition for the marching band, one that the past leaders had neglected to follow. I felt that this tradition should not be pushed aside, especially since it helped to encourage success and effort. With this in mind, I gave the section what they wanted. All they looked for was someone to follow and trust.…

During my 8th grade year, I had joined band searching for a chance of belonging. I had discovered, however, that band is more than just having a group of people to hang out with. Since I joined about two years later than most, practicing became a requirement. Every night I went home and rehearsed for hours, just so I wouldn’t fall further behind. About 500 blown-out reeds and two broken oboes later…
