What does it take to make a marching band great? Pride! What? Pride! What? Pride! These are the words that echo on the dusty Center Hill Marching Band Practice Field. In order for the Center Hill High School Marching Band to be a discourse community according to Swales, the community has to have “a broadly agreed set of common public goals, a mechanisms of intercommunication among its members, a participatory mechanisms primarily to provide information and feedback, one or more genres in the communicative furtherance of its aims, acquired some specific lexis, and a threshold level of members with a suitable degree to relevant content and discoursal expertise”(Swales 220-222). “A marching band is a group of musicians, usually woodwinds, brass and percussionists, that mix coordinated movements with the playing of music” (Christensen, and Wallace). The group moves and performs using their body and instruments to make sounds for the audience or spectators to see. There are many different types of performing bands that happen to march including: College and University marching bands, Drum Core International, and military marching parade bands. For this particular instance, I will be only focusing on High School marching and more specifically Center Hill High School’s Marching Band. The marching band has uniforms that sometimes coincide with particular show that is being performed. Center Hill for instance, has had the same uniform for the past 6 years, but the color guard which is a visual element of the marching band changes their uniform every year. His reply was “the goal of the season is to educate students and to help make them be productive citizens and to love music. The ultimate goal is teaching them music and understand the importance visual marching techniques. The secondary goal is to win at competitions and to have fun while making music and enhancing team building.” This goes along with any educator to be able to reach the students by the means on teaching being engaged in their productivity, but marching band begins to stand out in the ways that they actually learn the information they are being taught. The students are taught in the pervious concert season or through middle school band class. Now, concert season in contrast to marching season is focused on performing and understanding the fundamentals of music. The students are asked to memorize and play scales which are notes going up and down the five lines and four spaces of the music staff. It is in concert season that the foundation is built upon so that in marching season the band can use their mastery of memorizing and producing music as well as focus on the physical tasks at hand. These all go together to help the band achieve its specific goal. One goal being the students learning the music to perform, and two the students to get high ratings to win competition they participate

    I believe myself to be outspoken enough to command band members to dress to one another, yet not too intimidating as to drain the fun out of the process. Since freshman year, I have improved upon my dressing to forms and getting to the right dot at the right time and having participated in theater has augmented my appreciation for correct spacing and saying true to the drill written in our drill books.
