Marching Band Leadership

People are always looking for someone to lead them. We all need someone to look to for help or inspiration, whether it be a movie star, author, or even a teacher. Nowadays leadership is key to success. Just recently I learned how true the previous statement is. As part of the marching band, I play the alto saxophone and have had to deal with poor leadership within the section. This was both a setback and an opportunity. We were losing our section due to the poor section leaders we had. We were becoming split amongst each other as we had no one to bind us together. That is when I saw the opportunity to take back the section and build up unity and trust within each other once again. I had to step up when no one else would and demonstrate leadership to the members of my section.

From freshman to seniors the members of the group saw me as an improvement from what was previously given to them and, therefore, welcomed my new position with great acceptance. I did my best to be the best. Looking to never put down, but encourage my fellow saxophones, I strived for us to help the marching band in our efforts to become victorious at our competitions. There become a noticeable difference from the section before and after my guidance. The members had more energy and fire when it came to wanting to learn and improve. I rewarded the members who had shown the most dedication or improvement during a one week period of rehearsals with a bag containing goodies. This was a tradition for the marching band, one that the past leaders had neglected to follow. I felt that this tradition should not be pushed aside, especially since it helped to encourage success and effort. With this in mind, I gave the section what they wanted.
