I now had the title of section leader in the band, and was also an upperclassmen of the football team. It wasn’t exactly as easy as it seemed from those of the past. The sophomores thought they knew everything just because they had been there one year before, and the freshman thought they were hot shit for making it through middle school. It was painful to witness the underclassmen of football only squat halfway down, or the underclassmen of band march out of time, and have your advice go in one ear and right out the other. I decided that I needed some type of legitimacy as a leader. I needed to give the underclassman a reason they should follow me. The following week we would begin to max out on our various lifts, and at the same time we would begin to start playing our music at band camp. All that needed to be done was show how my 2 years in the programs compared to their one or no years in the programs. The underclassman began to show their frustration with not being able to squat more than 150lbs or the underclassmen of my trombone section not being able to play above a high D flat. After these minor trials the underclassman started to turn their attention towards me and some of the other juniors trying to guide them. The football players began to grow physically and the band underclassmen came together for a better sound.
