The percussion section of our band was preparing to lose a large number of seniors by the next fall. As freshmen, we had to prove that we could hold our own and continue to represent our section and our band as a whole with complete and utter confidence. During freshman year, we are allowed to compete in a band festival known as the Elkhorn Band Olympics. Anyone who wants to go to E.B.O. is allowed, as long as they are able to prepare a solo, duet, or ensemble. There are numerous students from the surrounding area that sign up to perform at this festival, so ranking high in your designated room is a big deal.…
Ever wondered what it’s like to be a part of one of the hardest working groups on campus? Seniors Ian Felter and Chloe Bartholio have been a part of Drumline for two and half years and four years respectively. While Ian plays the cymbals, Chloe is one of the Base 3 players in the battery. Both seniors have loved being a part of such a great group and believed that the experience has had a large impact on them as individuals as well as their future. Hard-working and motivated, these seniors, along with the rest of Chino Hills High School’s Drumline, practice long hours three days a week to perfect their music and marching skills.…
Rubbing Off in the 110 I’ve always been involved with marching band most of my time in school starting in 5th grade. I fell in love with it. I consider marching band an art form. The band marches in many different designs or a patterns on the field while playing music, and for the Marching 110, they perform a dance at the end. For the rubbings project, I wanted to celebrate my time here at Ohio University and give thanks to The Most Exciting Band In The Land.…
I sat at every football game, studying the drum major’s posture on the podium, the position of their hands and watched their behavior while in the stands, watching as they were the perfect example of leadership. I did all of this until I finally had the chance to try out for drum major. And when the day for auditions came, I felt prepared, I felt ready. I had had 7 years of dreaming and practicing, part of me felt I had the position in the bag. I marched a routine, conducted at different tempos and practiced the commands typically called out during half time in front of all of the directors and walked away feeling confident.…
It is their job to inspire and lead the rest of the band and make sure members of the band always aim to achieve their best. There should never be an “off break” from the season, drum majors are always professional and positive about their leadership position. The group will reflect the drum major’s attitude and energy. Passion is important, there must be a willingness to succeed and a pride in the marching…
There are several things that I can do personally to make this marching season amazing. First, I want to maintain a healthy diet. I think being able to have a healthy diet can help me come to rehearsal and have plenty of energy. Secondly, I will start having a morning routine of workouts. These workouts will help me during the season so I will give my best performance.…
The group you are leading may only have a handful of alumni, so you must be prepared to take a bunch of freshman, some who may not even have any marching experience, and make them perfect by the time the season is over. Most people would see that as a challenge, but the true leaders would see that as a challenge they are willing to take one. I love taking on challenges, as I feel it builds character. Over the…
Ever since I joined band in 4th grade, people have been talking about how excited they were to join marching band. At band day in 5th and 6th grade, everyone else shared how they couldn't wait until they were a 9th grader and could finally be able to perform and play in the stands like we saw the marching band do many times. In 7th and 8th grade, we had a watered down version of marching band that only played two parades. While I was glad to get snare drum both years, the exhilaration was never there, and I came very close to not joining marching band. But against my will, I ended up auditioning for drumline in April and I got the cymbals.…
For the 2017- 2018 marching season I am applying for the leadership position of Flag Captain. I would like to hold this leadership positions for many reasons. First, this will be my third year of color guard and could be my second year of being flag captain and on the SIHS band leadership team. Second, I have a passion for color guard that I love to put towards the program and have a good experience while doing so. In and outside of the band, I have a strong work ethic to get things done on time, strive for perfection the first time and complete tasks to the best of my ability.…
When I go college, I do not want to give up my favorite activities, but rather, build upon established interests and create new ones. Honestly, I do not know all of the activities in which I may participate while attending university. This is not because I do not know what I like; I just that I have not been exposed to these things yet. Although my personality is not fully molded, I actively search for novel and fulfilling experiences relating to music, food, and travel.…
I hate marching band. Leaving that trap of a class was the best decision I made in my entire high school experience. Once I had had enough of band, I joined theater. Joining theater fit my schedule well, introduced me to new people, and opened my mind to possibilities I hadn't considered before. The time I wasted in marching band was grueling.…
Final Draft Marching band is a group of musicians who play instruments while marching together. Either to make shapes and pictures. Usually at some sports events and parades and are performed competitively as well. The Blue Devils are a well known, professional, marching band. Nevertheless there is a lot of physics involved.…
I rewarded the members who had shown the most dedication or improvement during a one week period of rehearsals with a bag containing goodies. This was a tradition for the marching band, one that the past leaders had neglected to follow. I felt that this tradition should not be pushed aside, especially since it helped to encourage success and effort. With this in mind, I gave the section what they wanted. All they looked for was someone to follow and trust.…
During my time in high school, I have realized what I am truly passionate about. When I’m not at school or working at Chick-fil-A, my time is almost entirely devoted to band. I am also always looking for ways to create a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly space. Environmental awareness and music make me the happiest in my life. I’ve spent roughly 1,300 hours taking part in my high school marching band program.…
It was 8 a.m. during summer break and I had just walking into the high school to start my first year of marching band. Millions of thoughts rushed through my head, “What if I forget the music? What if I mess the drill up?”As I walked to the field one of my friends introduced me to someone who would become the greatest mentor during my high school career. Alex Murphy was the lead saxophonist at Kingsway Regional High School.…
