The march to Yorktown began on 19 August 1862 and was led by Washington and Rochambeau. During the protection of the Hudson Valley, a march in Newport, Rhode Island began, involving 3000 American soldiers and 4000 French soldiers. Fake dispatches where sent out by Washington in order to not compromise their destination, the dispatches were to reveal to Clinton that the Franco-American army was going to launch an attack on New York. Cornwallis’ troops were marched through Yorktown in a nearly two mile long procession. The British soldiers marched in between two lines of allied troops, Americans on one side and French on the other. The British troops marched to the location know today as Surrender Field and laid down their arms before they were marched as POW’s (prisoners of war) to various camps throughout America such as Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. This display that was considered dishonorable by the standards of the day was in response to the way that the American Commander, General Lincoln had been disgraced at his surrender at the battle of Charleston in 1780. Washington demanded a full surrender by Cornwallis keeping in mind the treatment his general received in Charleston. Paintings depict Cornwallis handing over his sword at surrender field October 19, 1781. However, Cornwallis himself was not present during the ceremony. Pleading an unknown sickness, Cornwallis sent General Charles O’Hara to deliver his sword to Rochambeau. Upon O’Hara’s arrival with the sword Rochambeau directed O’Hara to Washington.
