March For Life: The Only Non-Catholic School

Improved Essays
I was the only non-Catholic student in my entire class. I went to a private Catholic school in fourth through eighth grade. When I attended Catholic School I made great memories and even better friends, but I always felt a little different. Not only was I not allowed to participate in certain events, but I was also treated differently than my friends were for being a non-Catholic. At the end of my five years at St. Raphael, I learned to stand up for my beliefs and to respect other religions. Attending Catholic school influenced my views of religion.
St. Raphael Catholic School is composed predominantly of students of the Catholic faith, although non-Catholic students are accepted. So why did I go there? My parents felt a private school would be the best fit because of the limited number of students, enabling me to have more one on one time with my teachers. They did not care as to what denomination the private school was as long as it was private and had good credibility. My parents never thought that being Lutheran would lead me to being excluded from school events.
Since I was Lutheran, I was not allowed to go to the separate Church building

A woman visited our class to explain to us why abortion is wrong and about an event called March for Life. March for Life is a march that protests against abortion and wants to bring more awareness about how it affects the mother after the procedure. I ended up not going because of the expenses and the fact that my parents did not think a protest about killing babies was appropriate for a thirteen year old to attend. Ultimately, I am glad I did not go because it taught me to look more into what I choose to believe. I needed a bigger incentive to go other than the fact that my friends were going. Even though I tried to be like my peers, the teachers would not address me the same as other students, either

Another huge experience that has changed my outlook on life was going to the service project for the Isaac school district. The children attending the schools at the Isaac school district are in intense poverty. I have gone during the school days to help out in the classroom, to bring Thanksgiving dinner boxes, and to deliver a Christmas gifts to the kids. The kids on these campuses have the most amazing attitudes in the worst conditions. Some of the children go home on Friday and don't have a meal until they come back to school on Monday.…

I was meeting people who had gone through hell and back to make it here while I got here solely because of my parent’s hard work. These people helped me explore my compassionate side by telling me their stories of exactly what it took to come here. I grew incredibly thankful for the opportunity to meet and help these strangers and began making constant adjustments to my own life based on their story’s incite. For example, starting sophomore year I started missing the school bus to stay after school and then walked 2.5 miles home every day I needed to. If I had to baby sit that day, I would probably walk them to school with me and turn the trip into a Pokémon Go quest.…

In my adolescent years, I went through a couple of struggles before I became a Catholic. I became a Catholic when I was baptized as a little baby but then bad situations occurred and I missed out on being the Catholic I wanted to become as a little girl because my parents stopped taking me to church. As I grew up, I have always felt I had a something missing and I knew it was God’s love. When I hit freshman year in high school I found myself going back to the Catholic church with my Catholic friends.…

In recent years, the topic regarding biases and inflammatory content represented in the majority of our sources of news have entered common knowledge dramatically. Major social and political movements such as Black Lives Matter, March for Our Lives, and the Tea Party Movement also contribute to the major division that currently splits Americans into two factions. The March for Our Lives movement in particular has gained both notoriety and coverage by a plurality of news outlets in regards to its message of preventing gun violence in both schools and everyday lives. The message posited by the movement directly involves the clash of both traditional conservative and liberal values on gun control, which then is predominantly covered by American…

At 38 degrees latitude north and 92 longitude west, lies the rural farming town of California, Missouri. This town is rich in cornfields, small businesses, and many churches of all denominations. From the quiet fields, to the busy town square this city is home to 4,341 people. What I believe makes California stand out from the other towns is that it has the “oldest continuously operating fair west of the Mississippi” (Kunze). But the thing that impacts me most about this town is the California High School, it’s staff, and the students.…

I broke the folkway, or the minor everyday social habit, of appropriate topic of dress at church (Lecture). Outside of school, I am a peer to peer sex educator for Planned Parenthood, because of this I own Planned Parenthood clothing. I attended three conservative churches dressed in a t-shirt, hoodie and jeans. The t-shirt is bright pink and says “Planned Parenthood” on the front in lighter baby pink. Over this, I wore a light grey zip-up sweatshirt which stated “Teen Council” on the front and “Peer Led Sex Ed” on the back.…

There was no possible way to hide the fact that I had church on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays. While many of my friends spent their Friday nights are the homecoming football game, I was in church trying to teach a bible story to twenty beautiful, yet wreck less little kids. Towards the beginning of my High School years my friends actually attempted to invite me to all of the school activities, but after a while they began to give up and I would only see my friends in school. We grew apart and eventually I began to feel lonely. It’s not like they hated me, because they spoke to me as much as they could considering the fact that we were in a classroom with a teacher starring us down, but it was the simple fact that I was a “PK”.…

I grew up with Catholic grandparents who strongly believed and followed what the Bible says. For example, they believed that abortion was wrong because they thought that an unborn was a person like any of us, and for them God was the only one who could decide for the life of someone. I still remember my grandfather telling me, “"Truly children are a gift from the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward" (Psalm 127:3). They made me grow up with this belief, and I slowly started becoming a strong supporter against abortion. I never questioned them about their opinion because they made me believe in what they thought was right for me.…

Most people grow up religious, knowing who or what they believe in. Others grow up with no religion at all and only believe in what they see or experience on a daily basis. Growing up without a set religion can confuse a person quite a bit. There are many questions that are left unanswered. People grow up without religion for many different reasons, some being that they do not have transportation to a church, or that they do not live somewhere that has a church nearby, or maybe that they are just not interested in being religious at all.…

Another thing I have learned from being educated in a Catholic School is being able to trust and rely in God. Ever since I was a kid, I knew everything is possible through God. It is a habit to go to church every sunday and pray to God three times a day. For the first five years of elementary school, I attended the small school located at the back of our church’s property. Enrollment ranged from about 10-15 students in 1st through 8th grade. The last three years of my grade school experience were spent attending Lodi Seventh-day Adventist Elementary. This school went from kindergarten to 8th grade and fed into Lodi Academy, so in all, kindergarten through 12th grade! I came from a small, two-room school, and seeing as I was not very accustomed to being with such a large body of students, suddenly becoming immersed in a class with more students than that of my entire old school was definitely intriguing!…

My religious life story starts our pretty cookie-cutter. My dad came from a family that emigrated from the Ukraine and brought their strong catholic beliefs Catholic when I was 5 years old. I went to catholic school from Preschool to 8th grade, with mass on every Tuesday and on Holy Days of obligation. However, as I transferred to a public high school my entire extended family started to drift away from the church. We listened as sermons became increasingly related to donating more money to the Catholic Church, and watched as it out casted and judged others while preaching about not engaging in that activity.…
