Marc Anthony Corruption Essay

Since the beginning of time, power has always found a way to corrupt the individuals in its path. Many leaders of the world and ordinary people alike have fallen victim to this _____ struggle with power. For instance, Marc Antony from The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, and Democratic National Committee ex-chairwomen Debbie Wasserman Schultz are all examples of people who have been corrupted by power. Power is a very dangerous thing that can even corrupt the most diligent members of society. Throughout the play, Marc Antony portrays characteristics of corruption that increase gradually as the story progresses. After Antony assumes power in the Triumvirate, for instance, his attitude changes as he begins to manipulate his allies. More specifically, Debbie Shultz has shown extreme signs of corruption as former Democratic Party leader. To explain, Debbie Shultz “was forced aside by the release of thousands of embarrassing emails among party officials that appeared to show coordinated efforts to help Clinton at the expense of her rivals” (Gearan, Rucker, and Philip 2017). As the chairwoman for a prominent political party, Debbie Shultz should not have shown bias towards any candidate. Her willingness to hide things from the party and manipulate her rivals highlight her corruptibility. To concur, Shultz also lied to the media and Senator Bernie Sanders during the presidential election, which “contradicted claims by the party and the Clinton campaign that the process was open and fair” (Gearan, Rucker, and Philip 2017). As she explained that the race was fair, behind the scenes she was secretly helping Hillary Clinton win the primary election.
