Manufacturing Smart Glasses: Ethical or Just Plain Dumb
Engineering is an amazing field of study. It is the branch of science and technology concerned with the design, building, and use of engines, machines, and structures to improve one’s quality of life. This is actually what engineers have attempted to do with smart glasses. Smart glasses are essentially wearable devices that display images to the visual field of the user (Hoffman and Laurens Landeweerd). They can project information like data and images directly to your glasses lens. With the proper software and more advanced technology they can do much more. They can have applications within the healthcare, gaming, photography, military fields, commerce, sports, and now everyday entertainment. Smart glasses have been described as “the latest and most groundbreaking technology of current times” but what about the ethical implications of the technology (Chen and Jiin-Yu, 78)? As previously stated, smart glasses technology can be unethical and posed a threat to one’s right to privacy if engineers do not use phronesis in the creation phase. Phronesis is critical; it enables the moral agent to discern the appropriate actions for a particular solution. Phronesis allows scientist to see the situation from multiple perspectives for an in-depth understanding of the situation, discerns the relevant factors, and settles on an appropriate decision (Stefanazzi). In doing so we must find a balance and must consider the ethical results of our actions. With this information, we will be able to answer the question “What are the right and wrong reasons to use these glasses?” and further “What are the ethical and unethical ways to use this
