October, 8 2015 This art piece is a cigarette ad made in the 1902 by Manuel Orazi. Manuel Orazi was an Italian artist born in 1860 and died in 1934, though little is known of him his art work was liked well enough to be sold to this day. Though his most popular art work an occult calendar called Calendrier Magique published by L’Art Nouveau this picture of he was known for many other lithographic ads such as this one. Nonetheless Orazi uses his heavily influenced by Art Nouveau and art Deco. The art in this painting is to show the luxury that comes from smoking. Yet today I believe this image has the ability to still be striking today not, and definitely not for the reason of it wanting to make you to smoke but rather the emotion that can come off it. The art has the ability to describe a sense of depression. Burke states “For first, we must remember that the idea of pain to the highest degree, is much stronger than the highest degree of pleasure” when it comes to art, and this art work can be considered to show both sides of the coin. A lot of these lines “inspired by curved lines, nature, natural forms, and structures of plants and flowers” (Olsen). Curved lines are very natural in this world as nearly all organic objects are never straight but have a slight slant or curve in them, these objects could be something such as mountain, a riverbed, or a cloud in the sky but nature rarely has a perfect shape. The curved lines are very noticeable, in this piece, on the woman’s hair. The woman’s hair is very much like a mermaid’s hair in water, mermaids are seen as either a temptresses in most mythology or someone soulless and often lonely in the world. With her hair every which way defying gravity in swirls and stands very similar to the lines created by the smoke. This again comes back to the conclusion that she is consumed by her smoking problem and is not able to get over her addiction to smoking. When Burke continues onto his examples how negatively is used he goes onto saying how it is often common for an artist or writer to constantly use the same word or image to have the same hidden because when they see the image with repetition comes easier recollection of fear.The line aspect of her hair though not direct has a dark or scary message the imagery represents a lot of similar ideas in other works of art to the common man which makes it therefore scary by
