Practice shifting gears before you turn on the vehicle. Make sure you press down the clutch whenever you are going to change gears. Not doing so will cause you to grind your gears, slowly causing damage to your vehicle.
When first learning to drive a stick-shift, practice in an empty parking lot or another open area where you are unlikely to encounter other vehicles. Practice starting the vehicle by putting your left foot on the clutch and turning the key. Then shift into either first or reverse, depending upon the direction you want to go. Slowly ease your left foot off the clutch while putting your right foot on the gas. In the beginning, you will likely stall the vehicle several times. Do not worry. This is normal. Just try the process again.
While in the parking lot, practice skills such as stopping, starting, and shifting gears. You will likely only use reverse and first and second gear while in a parking lot.
