Manual Control Research Paper

Picture this: You and a friend are sitting in the front seats of a new, self-driving car. It is one of the few out there, so few people own them. Your owner's manual and the dealers who sold you the car repeatedly told you that the autonomous car was a “thing of the future”; that it was the safest option in the modern world. However, as you ride down the road, you notice a group of people begin to cross the street. Your car is not slowing. While there are other cars with manual controls, your model has none. The question here is not “What can you do now?”, but is “What can you do beforehand?” Let’s say, the reason the car did not stop in the scenario above was caused by a failure in the car’s programming to recognize pedestrians, resulting in brake failure. Manual controls could easily fix this problem. Any driver would be able to swerve to avoid the pedestrians, or press on the brakes to reconcile the vehicle’s malfunction. With the rise in popularity of self-driving cars, they will hit the market sometime in the future. With the autonomous car comes new laws, and with the possibility of machine error, I believe that autonomous cars should be required to have manual controls in order to be legal on the streets. Control of a vehicle is important to road safety. …show more content…
An overabundance of commands at once can cause the system to slow down, which at times can cause errors, or even system failures. With the camera watching the road, it has to keep track of everything on the road and beside it. With extra commands, similar to changing the music, temperature and speed all at once can cause the tracking to slow. This works similarly to human brains; our eyes track the road at an astonishingly quick pace, but if we are overloaded on distractions, perhaps drugs or alcohol, we begin to slow and accidents have a higher chance of

More than 90 percent of car crashes in the U.S. are thought to involve some form of driver error. Eliminating this error would, in two years, save as many people as the country lost in all of the Vietnam War says Peter Hancock a Professor of Psychology. Self-driving cars won’t be able to get tired, angry, frustrated or drunk. The cars will always know their surroundings and be aware of what is happening on the road while humans don’t know for sure. “Driverless cars are designed to have almost a superhuman-like ability to recognize the world around them.…

Men are sentimental beings, who can process current information faster, and understand the road structure more fluently. From this a machine like a self driving car is only going to understand what its code is telling the device. Currently, that code is only going to say the basic patterns and situations that are common in driving. The machine itself lacks the creativity to decide whether or not a certain and specific action shall be taken.…

There are advancements happening in medicine and in engineering that was thought to be distant only a few years ago, and some that were only dreamt of in the 20th century. One of these many advancements has been in the creation of autonomous cars which have started emerging all around the world by companies like Google, Tesla, and some major car companies. A recent article by Forbes magazine discusses the crash dilemma for self-driving cars. The specificities change from time to time but the crash dilemma stems from the idea of whether or not a self-driving car, when faced with no other option, crash into a specific person or its latter. An example of this would be if the car should crash into a group of elderly women crossing the street or into a kid who’s running across the street because he is late for school. In situations like this, there is often no one correct way to handle the situation. If a regular human driver was faced with this moral dilemma, they would probably do something instinctively.…

However, in order to prevent them from attempting to reduce liability by giving control to individual users, legislation should be put in place to protect them. As the author stated, there’s no perfect solution, but until better choices are offered, this seems to be best…

This report is about Self-driving Trucks. Self driving trucks are used so that autonomous trucks can coordinate their movements to platoon closely together over long stretches of highway, cutting down on wind drag and saving on fuel. The autonomous trucks will 'talk' to each other and coordinate their driving to maximize efficiency, including keeping the trailing vehicle behind the front one to minimize drag, similar to how trains of cyclists 'draft' behind the leading one. The self-driving trucks also can’t interpret facial expressions and gestures of nearby drivers to predict the driving behavior of other vehicles.…

The ethics behind this concept arose when they concept of decision making during spontaneous situations that require ethics and not just technology.
