Mansplaining Research Paper

Mansplaining is a derisive and condescending term insultingly used by women when referring to a man whom they are conversing with. The man's point is mocked not because his reasoning is faulty or his evidence is unreliable. In fact, his point is ridiculed simply on the basis of his gender. An example of mansplaining would be when British Members of Parliament explained to women that they don’t really want the vote in 1906. They stated, “Women would be neglecting their homes if they came into the House of Commons, and when they would be compelled to attend public meetings and to read all the newspapers and Blue-books and other dry documents, so as to fit themselves for the franchise. In no country in the world except in some of our Colonies had women enjoyed such rights and privileges of citizenship”. In this statement, men are assuming that they know exactly how women would feel, even though they are truly not aware. They explain to women that they have privileges that are more than good enough for them already, so they should not want to be able to vote. For example, the mother who leaves to go to a work meeting may leave behind a ten-page instruction manual for her husband, detailing exactly how to heat the bottle of milk: momsplaining. The 13-year-old vegetarian who lectures her mother on the negative effects of eating meat and why, really, she ought to start eating all organic foods and give up that delicious cheeseburger: childsplaining. The woman that hovers over her husband while he’s trying to cook and corrects him throughout the process: wifesplaining.
