Manoj Bhargava, founder of Five Hour Energy, leads his company in ways that corresponds with the two perspectives of transformational leadership Bennis and Nanus and the Kouzes and Posner. Bennis and Nanus theory of transformational leadership has four points: clear vision, social architects, created trust, and creative deployment of self. Bhargava had a clear vision for his company-- “We will produce any product that helps the population.” He created social archtects through the department called Stage 2: Invention Shop. Here the employees are to create. Through this department they have created machines that do not bring money in for the company, but they help developing countries like a bicycle that creates and stores electricity. Bhargava had a creative deployment of self through knowing his strength of being able to get any product out to the audience it would help best. He focused on using his strength and let those who were better at creating and building do that. Kouzes and Posner’s theory of transformational leadership included five principles: model the way, inspire a shared vision, challenge the process, enable others to act, and encourage the heart. It is obvious that Bhargava modeled the way by being a servant leader. He consistently followed the company’s vision. The first is how he challenged the process. As someone studying to become a math professor, yes, students need to know certain process that have been proven to work in the past, but that doesn’t mean that there are not different ways to solve problems. I would love to challenge my students to look at math differently and not just focus on the rules of past mathematicians. Bhargava is great at enabling other’s to act. I wish that I could be as good as he is at getting everyone to see the importance of helping other people. As the Community Ministries chair at the Baptist Campus Ministry (BCM), my job is to plan and lead local service, missions projects. I wish that I could create an environment where not only everyone was encouraged to act through service, but it came from within themselves to serve others. In everything, an encouragement of the heart is needed. Every leader needs to recognize that there is more than the project, team, or company that they are leading. I hope that as Bhargava encouraged each and every individual in his company to see more than just what pertains to them; I can do the same
