Harvest Moon

As the 1st of October nears, September is ending on a bright note, literally. Due to the rarity of the situation, I think it was only appropriate that I chose to write my report over the red blood/super moon/solar eclipse that took place last night. My paper will discuss that the three most basic questions I had about the unique moon, how I found the answers, and my overall final thoughts. Although it is a rare occurrence, that is not the only main reason for why I chose this APOD. After reading chapter 3 from the Horizon’s textbook, I thought the section covering moon cycles was the most intriguing. Initially, I didn’t really know that much about the significance of this moon aside from it being called the Harvest Moon. After brushing up on the topic, it turned out to be kind of a big deal.. According to Nasa’s APOD page, “Total eclipses of supermoons are relatively rare -- the last supermoon lunar eclipse was in 1982, and the next will be in 2033.” (Nasa) What I took from that is, in a nutshell, the moon would be a combination of a supermoon, a total lunar eclipse, AND it would be red. Now that I knew the basic knowledge of the

The name blood red seems so cryptic; no wonder so many conspiracy theorists believed this moon signified something more. I remember learning about reasons to why the moon has a red glow during an eclipse, but never really read much more into it. Not surprising, there is a rather logical (and rational) reason to why the red color. The color is due to “the dispersed light from all the Earth’s sunrises and sunsets falls on the face of the moon at mid-eclipse.” (EarthSky) In other words, the moon is red because of what sunlight is showing through the Earth’s atmosphere, gives the moon a reddish

With many religions and beliefs, comes a variety of creation stories. Through stories mankind has learned all kinds of lessons as well as where they came from, and these two creation stories are no exception. The similarities and differences between the Iroquois and Judeo-Christian creation stories are uncanny. Long ago, people believed that the Earth was the center of the universe, and that all the stars, planets, and other celestial bodies orbited around it. However, as pivotal discoveries were made and new theories emerged, society gained a much more insightful understanding of the cosmos above. In the second century, an astronomer by the name of Claudius Ptolemy proposed his geocentric model of the solar system, which depicted Earth in the center of the universe and the planets and the Sun orbiting in concentric circles around it. There were problems with this model, however, and years later an astronomer named Nicolaus Copernicus proposed another model which showed the Sun at the center.…

I had always been fascinated by modern mysteries and conspiracy theories, but before this class, I had no clue what to accept and how to analyze the information that I was presented to me. I chose the topic of the Moon Landing, because it enabled me to take a second look at the conspiracy theory through a new lens of experience. To understand where this idea of a hoax originates, we need to understand what was going on before the Apollo 11 moon landing. Starting in the 1950s, America was in a cold war with Soviet Russia, which was less of a physical battle and more of a challenge of who had a better structured government. It was a challenge of superiority that eventually led to the space race in 1955.…
