Today, society often gives off messages of what it means to be beautiful through the media and other social outlets. These messages can often lead to a misrepresentation of one true identity. The contradictory ideals of beauty standards in today’s society are detrimental to an individual’s self esteem because of the messages it send to young people on how to dress and behave. This is because people are receiving messages of what it means to feel like a woman or a man. It also creates unreal standards that cannot be achieved because of the manipulating factors of the media. It is something that changes drastically in both cultural concepts and in period of time. The beauty talked about in this essay is something of a western ideal. According to the western ideals, the beauty standards include being skinny, but ‘thick’ the same time, looking exotic and tan but not too tan, having big breasts and a big butt but not being ‘fat’. This has not always been the beauty standards in america, they have drastically changed from decade to decade and they are ever-changing. The beauty standards are built off of what is popular of that time and in todays society celebrities are what is popular. One of the main reasons why we care so much about beauty and looks in America is because of the media and the rise of the media. The media has had a great influence beauty and the beauty industry. With the rise of TVs and Movies and mass amounts of pictures, we are basically bombarded with the images of “beautiful people” or the “it girl”. Along with this we are also seeing mass amounts of people shaming others who do not look like the “it girl”. Then when we add social media to the mix, it is giving people a free pass to basically shame people they don’t deem as beautiful. When these young girls are constantly watching TV and commercials about how their current traits aren’t good enough, they start wanting to change themselves.
