The presentation of imagination accounts for the way a vast amount of advertisements are used to manipulate people. Whether it's drinking with the most interesting man in the world, to eating a huge burger with one of the hottest women there are, or using a body spray that will make women flock to you, imagery in advertisements have a heavy impact on viewers because the main purpose is to create awareness for a product or idea. Advertisers play on emotions and our desire to be part of the in-group. Stuart Hirschberg’s “The Rhetoric of Advertising” addresses how a manipulation is a powerful tool that allows advertisers to control people through their emotional involvement with an ad. This leads to the family chugging milk in fear of losing their limbs. Though the advertisers for Milk could have used a number of methods to sell their milk, the one used here focuses on scaring people into buying milk. The central focus of this ad is Mr. Miller the neighbor who looks like he is strong for loading his wheelbarrow but then loses, not one but both his arms when he tries to lift the wheelbarrow. The scene is directed toward the kids, indicating that if they do not drink this milk they will too lose their limbs because they are obviously not strong. This is purposely overdramatized in the video, so the viewer is meant to view and react to this with extreme emotion. The ad is supposed to leave a lasting impression on the viewer. The ad also mentions milk is just for babies because that is what most kids will say when forced to drink milk. They use this strategy to make the ad relatable to the viewers watching at home. Got Milk? Advertisers purposely make the ad relatable to families, so when families watch the commercial they will realize how relatable the ad is to them. The camera angles used in this advertisement make the video more extreme than it really is. When Mr.Miller loses his arms the camera closes in on him to make the scene more intense, but they use silly phrases like “ well that's not good” to make the situation suitable for the families watching at home.
