Manipulation can be used in a multitude of different ways. It is used to create thoughts that someone would have never thought had, make someone believe in something that is not real, or make someone do something for your own benefit. William Shakespeare uses manipulation in the play Macbeth to show the progression of the characters, as they are affected by manipulation, or use it themselves. Shakespeare uses equivocation to fully make us connect to the characters of Macbeth as people use manipulation so easily today as well. The witches, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth, and Malcolm all use equivocation on the people around them; ultimately, manipulation is the main theme of this play and influences the fate of the tragic hero. Although this does peak his interest, Macbeth is not fully convinced of the validity of these statements until he is informed that he is the new thane of Cawdor. The witches add some truth to their statements, that Macbeth will become thane of Cawdor; this is done to make Macbeth eager for the last statement to be true as well. This finally puts the idea of murdering Duncan in Macbeth’s head, although it does scare him at first. Subsequently, Lady Macbeth is not directly manipulated, but as she reads the letter that Macbeth writes to her after his encounter with the witches, she quickly becomes certain that her and Macbeth will rule Scotland.
