In the article entitled “ 4 Myths About Undocumented Immigrants That Are Hurting Feminism” written by Alan Pelaez Lopez, Lopez goes through four myths which surround undocumented immigrants, explains how these myths hurt feminism and how they affect his own life and understanding. Some of the myths which Lopez discusses are the idea that people believe undocumented youth did not migrate of their own free will, during this section he also discusses how the term DREAMer can be a form of oppression. Lopez also explains that not all undocumented people cross the border between the United States and Mexico. He then expands on this topic by reminding readers that not all undocumented immigrants are Latinx, Lopez even explains that he is an immigrant, he is both black and Latinx, and finds it difficult that society sees immigration as only a Latinx issues.…

The Declaration of Independence states that “All men are created equal.” However, that statement seemed to only apply to white men. African Americans and women were people too, but they were not treated fairly. The US did not fulfill the ideals of the Declaration of Independence for all people from 1815-1850 due to lack of political and social rights towards African Americans and women.…
This represents the unjust treatment women endured and makes it…
“The history of men 's opposition to women 's emancipation is more interesting perhaps than the story of that emancipation itself. ”(Virginia Woolf) The women’s rights movement has been a key change in America since the 1930’s. Whether it was defying the norm, fighting unequal pay, job discrimination or maternity leave women never backed down in the face of the men who asserted their control over them. Ever since the 1930’s, females have made huge strides in gender equality, but even with so many acts, women’s rights still have aways to go.…
For this essay the two films that have been chosen are Pride and Suffragette. Both films are quite recent being released in 2014 and 2015 respectively. For each of the films this essay will go through the accuracy of the films and how they portrayed the historic events. This essay will argue that although there are some inaccuracies with both films, that they both portray a suitable amount of accuracy for these film types. Pride follows the miners strikes and how the gay activists helped, while Suffragette follows the early period of the feminist movement.…
The book Feminism for Everybody by the author Bell Hooks gives a clear idea to the reader about what feminism is, the history of the feminist movement, and what people think of feminism. The way the author has written this books gives the readers a different perspective on the feminist theory. What feminism? To answer this question, we must first establish a commonality in language: namely, what is feminism? Feminism could be defined as a person who supports females, or as a movement that would end sexism, and oppression.…
Poor treatment of the women in the brothel assists in making a point about how women are objectified and treated as less valuable than men. Children learn from a young age that men are more valuable than their female counterparts. Women are taught subservience and suffering…
At first there is grief but then leads to the recognition that she will be set free. Both women in these stories are the victims of the gender inequality women received in the 19th century, an era where women were treated as second-class citizens. Although of the…
During World War II between 1939-45, women were progressively obtaining jobs that they likely would not have been able to attain previously due to the absence of males in those fields. And around the 1960s, several federal governments mandated laws for the economic improvement for women like The Equal Pay Act of 1963 and the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Despite almost fifty years of increasing equal opportunities gained by women, and the fact that today women account for approximately 57% in the labor force, their opportunities for leadership roles seem far from equal to their male counterparts. Not only that, the wage gap of women compared to men is almost 22% more (“A Guide to Women 's Equal Pay Rights”). Although the statistic of women in the…
Feminism isn’t just equality amongst men and women; it can be used to illustrate social, economic, cultural, even political movements. In the novel An Untamed State, men see women as powerless in a country like Haiti where men take advantage of women. The role of feminism is switched when the women display this nature of taking advantage of men emotionally. An Untamed State show that women hold both emotional and social power which is more important than physical dominance that a man can have. Physical actions stem from feeling and emotional reactions, so if women possess that, then they are in complete control.…
Sarah Ruwe English 1001 Rebecca Reynolds October 1, 2015 Feminism What is Feminism? Many people when asked, already have a misconstrued idea of what Feminism is all about. The top being that feminist are a group of women that despise all men, men can’t be feminist or it’s only focused on women’s rights. Now, there’s a lot of the focus on women’s rights when it comes down to it, but that’s because women still have a lot of catching up to do when it comes to equality. But bottom line is that feminism fights for both genders, to stop discrimination, exploitation, oppression and gender conforming.…
Redstockings was a radical feminist movement started in the 1960s. In their proclamation, “Redstockings Manifesto,” women of the Redstockings movement call for women to realize and fight against the oppression of their class, and call on men to assist them in not only making men and women equal, but also releasing women from the male’s control. To begin, the Redstockings indicate that the oppression of women is not only present in the areas of employment and politics. Women are only viewed as domestic creatures; however hold no power even in this area. When they do not meet these domestic expectations, women are threatened with violence.…
Patriarchy has been defined in a variety of ways, initially set out as a concept by Millett in 1970 (cited in Bryson, 1999), and later fully developed by Walby in Theorizing Patriarchy (1990). However, the concept was widely critiqued, and fell into dis-use, although it has been the subject of attempts to re-position it as an academic concept (e.g. Hunnicutt, 2009). This essay aims to discuss the prevalent accepted definition of patriarchy, and the criticisms made of it, before analysing more recent usage of the concept and whether it may continue to be useful. The first criticism of patriarchy that this essay will briefly focus on, is that it is too abstract (Gottfried, 1998). This essay then will elaborate on the ways in which this contributes…
