The main character’s name is Jeffrey Magee, and he can be described as an 11-year old boy. His parents had died when he was three. He desperately wants to be part of a family and to have a home with an address where he can come back every night. Jeffrey is very athletic and has many unusual skills. He earned the name “Maniac” because of his odd talents, such as bravely going into houses deemed scary by others, untying complicated knots, or sticking his hand in a snake hole. Jeffrey liked to read and was educating himself by going to the library. He even taught old Grayson how to read. He was very helpful to everyone. He did his chores without being asked, and would always help with things around town.
Their problem is about Jeffrey wanting to belong to a family and to have a home and this is important because he has never had a true family. He lost his parents when he was very young and his uncle and aunt were never a true family to him. They were always separate, never talking or sharing with each other. Jeffrey is homeless and this story is about his quest to find a home where he can belong. He did have a house with his aunt and uncle, but there was no sense of belonging there. Jeffrey runs away and chooses homelessness over living in a dysfunctional household. He eventually finds a home and family with the Beales. The other theme in this story is racial prejudice/discrimination. This prejudice is created because there is no opportunity for interaction between the blacks and the whites.
