The characters are round, because most of them, for example Grayson and Mars Bar, underwent changes throughout the story when Maniac helped them realize their previous opinions were incorrect. Maniac also changed when he became aware of racism and racial segregation. His newfound awareness of racism was, in the long run, a positive development for his character and the story.
