Mani Leadership Retreat Analysis

Manifestaciones (Manifestations) Manifestaciones or short for Mani is a leadership retreat hosted by the Center for Latino Arts and Culture (CLAC) located on College Avenue. Although it is expected that this retreat is only for Latinos since it is hosted by the CLAC, anyone from any race can go because although the retreat is Latino-oriented it is not Latino exclusive. There is an application that every potential participant must fill out and the participants are chosen based on their responses on the application. Because of limited space, not everyone is allowed to go but I was fortunate enough to be chosen as one of the participants. For me, Mani was truly one of the bet experience of my life that I will never forget. At first, …show more content…
Right from the start, the facilitators already had the participants doing an activity for us to break us out of our shells. On the way there we had to sit next to someone that we did not know and learned things about them in which we had to present later on as evidence that we did the activity. Right away from the start, I made a friend that I will never forget. Mani went on for three days and two nights on October 21-23 in a YMCA-owned facility called Camp Bernie. Every day was full of workshops and activities that would both educate us and bring everyone together. My favorite activity was a team building exercise called the Low Ropes. This exercise involved the use of ropes that were set up as obstacles and everyone had to get through them with the help of the teammates. Whenever someone slipped off or was about to fall the team members would be on the sides ready to …show more content…
One person in which I had an automatic connection to was Ansly. We meet over dinner and it was as if we had known each other for years because the conversations would just flow. Till this day everyone that went to Mani still talks in a group chat where we plan get-togethers and inform each other on upcoming events. Mani was also very useful in educating everyone on important issues that are rarely addressed in society because it makes people uncomfortable. Such topics include respecting and properly understanding the way a person chooses to identify both through ethnicity and sexual orientation. One of the many aspects of Mani that I love is the open environment that it offered. During the last night, we had a workshop that was dedicated to answering any anonymous question that anyone had regarding sex. Most individuals are scared to get answers because of judgment but that was not an issue at Mani. I hope to return next year as a facilitator and hope that it will be as great as the first

It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. My parents only have an elementary education and have no understanding of the U.S educational system and as the middle child of five siblings, I understand the responsibilities and pressures youth in these populations have with shouldering the burden to accessing and disseminating information to their entire family. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…

One of my favorite activities was the washing clothes one. You would wash a rag with a washboard in a tub. I would dip the rag in water, cover it in soap and then rinse it out over and over again until I was satisfied with cleanliness of the rag then I would put it through this mangle-type drier. With the help of a worker I would crank all the water out until I was left with a damp rag, and then id hang it up with clothespins on a clothes line. Another activity I really enjoyed was the school.…

Recently, I attended the grand opening Centro Latino at Emory. It was sponsored by the Latino Student Organization, in collaboration with the Alumni Association and SOL of Multicultural Emory. This event was certainly one of celebration as it marked a moment in history for Emory by having a special space Hispanic, Latin American and Latinx students on campus. Centro Latino, which is located on the second floor of the Dobbs University Center, West Wing, was festively decorated with flags of the countries that encompass the Latino community. The event’s program was led by a college senior, Bryan Natividad.…

Through those activities there were some kids who were struggling at some activities. I motivated them to keep pushing on, giving them pointers on how to complete the activity. I felt connection to the campers within a week. For example even though I didn’t do a challenge myself, I still felt accomplished by helping out the campers to complete the activity. This experience taught me to trust people who I never meet before.…

Frederick Douglass once said “It is not light that we need, but fire; it is not the gentle shower, but thunder. We need the storm, the whirlwind, and the earthquake.” This means that difficult circumstances are needed to become better versions of ourselves. As someone who overcame the difficulty of balancing academics, athletics, and involvement with clubs and organizations on campus, I personally agree with this statement. Based upon the qualities I developed during these difficult circumstances, Frederick Douglass would believe I’m deserving of a scholarship bearing his name.…

The three readings for this week really contextualized the start of the Chicano Movement as they presented community organizing, history, and emotions of the Chicano people at that time. The first reading, “El Plan Espiritual de Aztlan,” outlined a plan for Chicanos to unite under La Raza and take back their identity. It creates a structure for liberation and outlines goals under the concept of nationalism in order to bring the people back to their roots as a people who have not been under the control of European nations. It is because of European colonialism that the Chicanos do not have control over their own identities, as it has been exploited by the Europeans and Americans for so long. El Plan empowers the Chicano people to take back their land, culture, economy, and…
