Manhunt Book Review “Manhunt The 12- Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer” by James L. Swanson is a highly detailed account of everything related to the Lincoln’s assassination. Swanson accounts almost every hour of the chase for Lincoln’s assassin, John Wilkes Booth. Swanson uses extensive detail to create a suspenseful and dramatic depiction of the Lincoln assassination. James L. Swanson is an accomplished author. He has recived the Edgar Award for his New York Times Bestseller “Manhunt The 12- Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer”. He has degrees in history from the University of Chicago. He also has several other books. They follow a similar theme of presidents and their assassins, such as his book about John F. Kennedy. He writes much like a journalist. He does not have and apparent bias and writes in a narrative format. This book is truly a page turner. On reveiwer writes, “Don't start reading this book unless you have blocked out some time. You won't want to put it down. Many people may might think Booth acted alone, and in a unpremeditated …show more content…
The story comes alive because Swanson was so meticoulous in his research. He even quotes the exact words spoken by people over a hundred years ago. He quotes Mary Lincoln’s last words to her husband before he got shot,” What will Miss Harris think of my hanging on to you” (Swanson, 39). Swanson even dedicates an entire paragraph describing the box that the Lincoln’s were sitting in, describing in detail the appearance and even the positioning of the Lincoln’s. To add drama Swanson also quotes the scenes happening in the play while concurnently descrbing the maneuvers and cunning of booth as he crept into the Box with his .44 Deringer. I really liked this part because it was the most intense. I imagined this scene to be similar to how TV shows add drama by switching between an upcoming climax and an ongoing

The way the author, James L. Swanson, describes the epic adventure that booth goes on after he assassinated President Lincoln in Chasing Lincoln's killer, increases the drama of the mood and creates a foreboding mood by foreshadowing the story. Throughout the story, the author used vivid descriptive details to describe the setting to either increase the drama of the mood or foreshadow the conflict. When Booth was about to shoot President Lincoln, the author created a foreboding mood by foreshadowing; The scene when Booth pulled the trigger was described as, “...line was followed by an explosion of laughter from the audience. The black powder charge exploded and split the bullet toward Lincoln’s head. The muzzle flash lighted the box…

Thomas J. DiLorenzo is the author of the book, The Real Lincoln. A great book in my opinion. DiLorenzo wrote this book to tell about Lincoln’s experience and what he did while he was the sixteenth president of the United States of America. The reason that makes me believe why DiLorenzo wrote this book is that it says in the first paragraph of the introduction, “According to one source, more than 16,000 books have been written on virtually every aspect of Lincoln’s private life and public life. But much of what has been written about Lincoln is myth “(1).…

DeLorenzo stated, “More words have probably been written about Abraham Lincoln than about any other American political figure (1). Likewise, according to Donald Davis, Pulitzer Prize winning Lincoln biographer, “much of what has been written about Lincoln is a myth” (1). In DeLorenzo’s book the myths of Abraham Lincoln will be evaluated and depicted until the true Lincoln is revealed. Lincoln is thought to be the one of the best presidents the United States; however, most history teachers do not teach about Lincoln’s real agenda and how the constitution stood in the way of his plan for the government to be centralized. According to DeLorenzo, “Lincoln will forever be known as the Great Emancipator” (2).…

On July 7, 1865, Mary Surratt walked to her death. Because of her supposed involvement in Abraham Lincoln’s assassination, Mary was sentenced to death by hanging (Kingseed). Mary transferred binoculars and shooting irons to her tavern for Booth, lied to the authorities claiming to not know Lewis Powell, and her son, John H. Surratt Jr., was a confederate spy and was suspected of helping with the president’s assassination. This evidence was enough for Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, the official in charge of locating and capturing Lincoln’s killer and conspirators, to condemn Mary Surratt to death. There have been many arguments and opinions over the years about whether or not Mary’s sentence was justified.…
