“Theatre? Why theater of all things? Drama club, are you serious?” were questions I was often asked by my parents throughout my high school drama club geek phase. As my parents had, most parents often fail to acknowledge the role of theatre and art in our society consequently discouraging their child from participating or appreciating a great influence in everyday life. However, performing arts has a social impact, economic impact, and educational impact. Nevertheless, my parents did not know how big of a role theatre played in my education throughout grade school up until I graduated high school. For instance, in Manhattan, New York, there is an organization called Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC). MTC offers an education program that encourages, “participation in the arts through in-class instruction,” and their goal is to, “stimulate participants’ imagination, creativity, and critical thinking skills through active engagement with challenging new theatre works” (Manhattan). Through MTC, students in the Manhattan area have an opportunity to develop strong critical thinking skills by participating in theatre and performance. Moreover, strong critical thinking skills often help students throughout their education by enabling them to analyze and synthesize information as well as content they are taught. Plays are taught best by seeing them performed live. …Students who see live theater become more knowledgeable of the plot and vocabulary of the plays, more tolerant, and better able to read the emotions of others. (Greene 58).
The research conducted strongly supports better comprehension of literature through live theatre in students. Watching a performance right before their eyes statistically proved the expansion of the student’s knowledge.
In addition to developing critical thinking skills and enhancing comprehension, the performing arts offer a different teaching style for literature teachers. MTC’s education program has a program goal that goes hand in hand with offering different teaching styles. MTC states that the goal is, “to improve the ability of classroom teachers to teach the arts and to incorporate arts education into the curriculum” (Manhattan). In fact, MTC offers a professional development workshop. The purpose of the workshop is so,
Classroom teachers and school administrators participate in free artist-led workshops focusing on a Manhattan Theatre Club production. This process introduces teachers to MTC’s instructional model and to innovative techniques for teaching theatre and dramatic literature.
