In the 1990s, Australia began to highly regulate guns inside the country and has instituted massive gun control due to a devastating mass shooting. Their violent crime has dropped and there are hardly any illegal weapons in the country. The statistics are undeniable. However, America is a completely different story. Most gun related crimes are committed with illegal weapons that come across the border. Australia borders no other country and can much more easily control the flow of illegal weapons. The two countries also do not have the same history or culture. Australia never had to fight an oppressive government to gain their freedom and does not have the same feelings towards big government like Americans do. They never wrote a document like the Declaration of Independence that calls for the abolition of a tyrannical government by force. Many Americans believe their guns are what keep the government in check. Australians trust their government far more than Americans do. So if we are completely different countries, why should we assume that something that works in Australia would work in America? Australia has a population of around twenty three million people while the United States has almost three hundred and twenty million. We have fourteen times more people than they do. Mandatory voting works in Australia because they have a substantially smaller population. They can much more easily enforce it than we
