Students have complained that a school uniform is much less comfortable than the clothes they used to be able to wear to school; the uniforms make students scratch and fidget, distracting them from schoolwork (“School Uniforms”) Making a school uniform policy mandatory has the potential to negatively affect a student’s self-image. In a Uniform, a student will lose their individuality; this could have detrimental effects on a student’s self-image (“School Uniforms”). A student’s dress reflects who they are, and what they love. In similar dress, a student will blend into the crowd, and feel they cannot be any different or speak out about their different thoughts or opinions. Student will all look as if they have the same economic status, but will not have the individuality that makes them interesting and unique. Because of the lowering self-image, students will not feel more connected to their school community (“School Uniforms”). Also, when everyone is dressed the same students (generally female) will compare how each other looks in the uniform. A student can lose confidence based on how bad they feel they look, and not perform as well in school. In a standard dress school, students can wear clothes they like and feel comfortable wearing. Potentially all students will feel equal, yet many will not feel able to stand out. A school with uniforms will have a more professional environment for students and teachers than schools in the standard dress group. In contrast, schools with uniforms did not excel on tests in English and Math any better than schools in the standard dress group. In fact, Schools without uniforms achieved higher scores on the test! Another proven fact that Statistics show is that after installing a mandatory school uniform requirement in a School in Long Beach California, crime rates dropped monumentally. To choose whether or not a school should require uniforms, all problems occurring in the school should be considering. A school with frequent student violence, and disrespectful un-professional students should highly consider using the uniform as a form of punishment to students, and more importantly to see positive changes in their behavior. In contrast, a school with well-behaved, intelligent students, a uniform would not be necessary to positively affect the school, because it also has the potential to negatively affect a student’s self-image.
