Mandatory Service: Unnessisary In The United States

Decent Essays
Mandatory service is unnessisary in the United States. The main reason I say that is because it is unconstitutional, and defies our rights as citizens to live as we believe is right. Although I fully support our military, government workers, and the such like, I see a major problem with mandatory service. The biggest problem as mentioned below is that a person who is forced to do something will rarely ever put his/her heart into what they are doing. In order for someone to really do a service for our country in any way, they must have the "want to" so to speak to put others in front of themselves. As recently as this past June, Senator Rand Paul introduced legislation that would effectively dismantle the selective service, and has named it the Muhammad Ali Bill. Citing the lack of necessity for it in present times do to the already massive outreach of the United States across the world and a focus on arming/training nations we are tasked to defend (as opposed to “boots-on-the-ground”) and the problems forced conscription can bring, it calls for an end to the entire branch, thus leaving the military on a permanent volunteer-force…

The Draft has been present in American history since the 1940’s when men were drafted during both periods of peacetime and periods of conflict in order to fill the vacancies within the United States Armed Forces that could not be filled through voluntary means. And though the draft was ended when the United States Armed Forces transitioned to an all-volunteer military force the possibility of the US bringing conscription back is overwhelmingly high. Although, it may be possible that in critical conditions social conscription could be beneficial towards the health of a nation, the lack of moral conquest is overwhelming, therefore the draft should not be reinstated for it takes away the freedom of individuals in the ‘land of the free’. The…

Some people feel that the draft is a necessity even during times of peace and want it to be reinstated. What those individuals really want is mandatory service requirements. The draft was used in the past because of a shortage of troops, however that’s not the case today. We should not reinstate the military draft because we currently do not need soldiers, it is unclear of who would serve and who would not and how they may perform, and the military would be demoralized due to lack of commitment and comradery from potential…

And what is conscription if not the involuntary servitude of the citizens of Australia. Ultimately, the issue of required military service revolves around the idea of freedom. Since some are persuaded that free individuals can't be trusted to make what they claim to be “the best decision”, they accept that they must be compelled to make the “best decision”. What they neglect to perceive is that in compelling individuals to make the “best decision”, they devastate the very freedom they claim to need to ensure. They successfully obliterate freedom to secure freedom.…
