Most were volunteers. However, I did meet some that were given an ultimatum as a teenager to join and turn their life around, or go to jail. Their service turned their life around, and the country benefited from their service when they excelled at their job, and were no longer causing crime in the streets. The service member adapted to the structured setting, and thrived in their new life. While this is not always the case, it is an illustration to the nay sayers that bring up their concerns towards forced service requirements. Many believe that it’s bad for moral to mandate serving. Many people believe that conscription would be the governments way of acquiring “ownership” on all its people. I do believe that everyone should serve to learn what it is to fight for your country and to learn how the government works in some capacity. Among the many benefits, there are some cons that should be addressed. One such disadvantage of having all citizens serve at least one year of service would be that no one would be regarded as exceptional for going above and beyond by serving their country. Some groups believe that with forced service it would create animosity towards the government. Although these are very possible effects from creating a law of conscription, I do believe that the outcome would be far more beneficial than not, and if implemented with great care the benefits would greatly outnumber the adverse effects.
