When discussing the topic of public service by American citizens, many people under the age of 30 are stating that this mandatory public service is unacceptable. On the contrary, a majority of Americans are in favor of a year of mandatory national service for 18-25 year olds. People are still growing and maturing at ages 18-25, so some believe that public service during that age is crucial. With that being said, if serving your community is like a job or unenjoyable to you, I wouldn’t suggest contributing to public service. “Help others and give something back. I guarantee you will discover that while public service improves the lives and the world around you, its greatest reward is the enrichment and new meaning it will bring your own life …show more content…
Some people very much enjoy serving their community unlike those who despise it and only do it because they are forced to. Like I had said before, the citizens who enjoy public service are the ones that I would want as the leaders of our nation. Leaders should show our world how we do things just as a mother trains her child to recognize right and wrong. Picking up trash for our public areas is a satisfying example. Reduce, reuse, and recycle these were three words I heard constantly as a child but never really put them into practice until our school had a seminar on it and showed us how important it was to keep the plastic to a minimum. “Americans drink enough bottled water every year that they could stretch around the world over 100 times.”(Brita) Although it may seem like on a small gesture using a Brita water is a type of public service. Just by buying a Brita filter you alone could reduce that number by 300.
There is a need to require such service of all American citizens. If you are disabled, obviously you can’t get out and serve for your community but on the other hand, you could do the little things like

Before attending high school, my elementary school teachers would talk about civic engagement, and their descriptions lead me to believe that participating in community service would be boring and burdensome. I remember my teachers saying things like,” In high school you’re going to have to do community service in order to graduate. Such as volunteer at an elderly home, or an animal shelter.” Prior to actually completing a service project, I only had an unappealing image of community service in mind. However, once I got to high school, I grew to love community service as well as learn the importance of…

Serving in the military voluntarily is one characteristic that makes America stand out. If young people were forced into military service, this would take away some freedom of choice that Americans have. History has shown that Americans reacted negatively to forced military duty. Our current military is so large that this policy would be unnecessary. Furthermore, not all Americans meet the physical and mental requirements.…

I have completed many hours of community service and I believe that it is my responsibility to involve myself in my community in any way possible. Getting involved in the community helps build a strong character and it teaches certain values that will benefit other communities. Speaking of community improvement, it is also my responsibility to pay any taxes set for me by our state and federal governments. Without taxpayer money, it would be impossible to maintain many of our most precious and crucial government funded organizations. If the American people allowed those organizations to fade away, we would be hurting our country and helping ourselves.…
