Mandatory physical education is a very effective manner of improving many of the problems adolescent Canadians face today. With the rising obesity in the youth of Canada, there is only a future of higher levels of disease and death within the country’s population. On top of this, there is a direct correlation between the level of physical activity children participate in , and the level of academic success the will achieve. Thirdly, one of the most important skills an individual can have is communication, and with the team based nature of physical education, this is a fantastic medium for development in this area. Physical education is very important for the youth of Canada, and therefore should be mandatory in all Canadian high schools. …show more content…
More importantly it is beneficial to cognitive processes and functions, specifically those related to succeeding in academics. The Center for Disease Control has done vast research in this area, their evidence shows, “Overall, 11 of 14 studies found one or more positive associations between physical education and indicators of cognitive skills and attitudes, academic behavior, and/or academic achievement” (p. 28). Therefore, physical education not only promotes a healthy body, but also a healthy mind.

Almost all activities that take place in physical education classes involve some degree of teamwork. Whether it’s simple games like soccer or baseball, where it is imperative to work together as a team in order to reach your goals. Or more complex games such as “Doctor dodge-ball” where the objective is almost impossible to reach without developing a good level of communication throughout your team. Physical education has incredible potential to help those who aren’t as social break from their shells, and to encourage those who are already social to continue their ways.
