Mandatory National Service

Decent Essays
America is founded on freedom and the choice to pursue happiness. Forcing its citizens to lose two years of their life to national service is detrimental to this free country. Therefore, a year of required national service is harmful to the lives and spirits of American citizens.
In the spirit of volunteering the volunteer willing gives away their time and in some cases money, to help a cause. Forcing people to volunteer will make some of its volunteers useless in the long run. Studies have shown that more work and quality work gets done if done by choice. Requiring service will produce mediocre work and mediocre work is detrimental especially in terms of the military or other government position. This also infringes on freedom. Allowing people to pursue happiness is something America was

If a mandatory national service was put into place most people would think that it's most beneficial to themselves to serve between the ages of 18-26. This is the same time most people go to college as well. Putting this law into place will cause people to start their adult lives later. Studies show that couples are having babies later and later in life in this day and age. It may not seem horrible to push pregnancy back a year but as the mother gets older the risk for birth defects and infant deaths increase. Another way national service gets in the way of the pursuit of happiness.
Likewise, a majority of people will avoid college and go straight into the workforce. After their service. Most people will see their prime used up for national service and won't attend college once they get out of it. This will eventually cause a number of professions like doctors and therapists to go down in number. The gradual decline of these professions will eventually lead to a hike in prices for the services these jobs offer. Also not pursuing a higher education will leave some people stuck in a dead end job and block their way to

As Debs quotes "They have always taught and trained you to believe it to be your patriotic duty to go to war" meaning the government has taught one as a child to serve your country. As you go along in school one develops this mentality that as a citizen of this country one has to fulfill duties that will help the country like fighting in wars. For example, since the start of school a person is required to pledge allegiance to the flag. Students would get in trouble if they were to refuse pledging to the flag. Similar to the draft if one were to resist it, then they would not be for filling their so call duties as a citizen of the United States.…

The author of ‘The Draft Would Compel Us to Share the Sacrifice’ endorses that in the view of the privilege is joining and not the right he demands the populace join for two years. He insists,” That is why I continue to call for Universal National Service, which would mandate a two-year service requirement for Americans ages 18 to 25,” this is due to that fact that he truly believes that being in the military is something we all should do. Furthermore, this leads to the topic of everyone having their owns opinions and that the masses have different…

Conscription in WW1 was forcing to take men 18- 40 years old for military service even if they did not want to unless if they were widowed with children or ministers of a religion. Everybody knows that there are a lot of cons too conscription some of these cons are violating free will to people because they don’t have a right to pick if they want to go to war or not. One of the pros of conscription is that it without it no one will join the war. Another pro is that it helps out with nationalism so they can actually say that they care about their country and they are willing to do anything and everything they could to help out in the war even if they leave their families for 8 years.…

The experience that the individuals will gain is also beneficial not only to the young individuals joining, but to our military forces. However, as McChrystal states, “this transformation is not exclusive to the military (566). McChrystal says, “Skeptics would see teams of young people-affluent and poor, college-educated and not- devoting their days to a singular, impactful mission” (566). The program encourages the young to devote their selves when catastrophes strike or in rural areas where volunteers are needed. Another reason I find Universal National Service to be beneficial, is how it can help stem the high school dropout rate.…

    Essay On Mandatory Draft

Many factors hold firm against the argument regarding a mandatory draft. For one, it would be a huge violation of the American citizen’s rights and it would be frowned upon by many because our country is one who advocates freedom and if the United States did mandate a draft, it would be a move of hypocrisy. Also, many brilliant minds could be wasted if there ever was a draft because of a war. The opportunity for their talents to be put to use elsewhere with the possibility of contributions being made elsewhere, would be crushed. Another fact is that some people just wouldn’t fit in in a training/warlike environment.…

We don’t want the United States to be all-military based where every single man and woman have to fight and have to risk their lives. There are hospitals, Rural Legal Services, and more options that do not include having to hands on fight, however it still helps. It has been said that America is the land of the free and the home of the brave, but really America isn’t free if young men and women have to serve a mandatory service in the military. If a young man or woman wants to fight and die for our country on the front lines of war, that it should be their decision to make. First reason, young people in this country have so much more to live for. It is a proven fact that 17.68% of the young people that go into war die. It is also a proven fact that 48.20% are casualties.…

When World War I and World War II were in the uprising, the U.S. Congress passed selective service acts that gave the president the authority to draft men into the military. Therefore it was mandatory for men to go to war, when drafted. If you do a little research like I have you will find that the U.S army or military services is the most powerful in the world, and that's impressive. Also, you cannot win a War by nuclear war fair. I'm going to discuss the reason why I strongly disagree with the reason why should we make the Draft in effect.…

“long service professionals fight more effectively and are far less likely to die in combat than amateurs” (Scales 21). While this is true of soldiers a volunteer army is not the same as a career military. Regardless of how long people decide to stay in the military there will always be young, green enlisted soldiers who fall under the command of their more senior noncommissioned officers and college educated commissioned officers. Many who argue against the draft like to point out how volunteer soldiers are more effective because they are “more eager to train and fight” but according to “Military Draft” ninety-three percent of all americans who fought in World War II were draftees.…

How would you feel if you had to serve in the military at only 18? Mandatory military service is cruel and uncalled for because they could have a medical issue, missing limbs and body parts, and they are blind and deaf. It's a little unfair for a girl or boy to have to fight in the military. They might not want to fight in the military for their country, and just want to be a teacher or an astronaut.
