This especially has to take into account those with families and a morgage and especially those in single parent households.What menial amount of money the government or charities can give just isn 't enough for the needs of families today. I read, "Currently, volunteers provide assistance on their own time without pay. If people are required to serve for a year, then they need to be paid. This would drain the finacnes of charities or government." I happen to be from Greece, a country that requires at least a year of military service for every citizen. This includes military drills, helping out local charities and even police officers if need be. It also helps people learn discipline and respect. It is also useful to have a huge reserve of men capable of fighting if there ever was a military threat to the country. However, it doesn 't exactly work this way. Greece is a country with absolutely no money at all. Most people joining military service are just sent to bases constructed 300 years ago and sleeping on beds with pillows just as old. These soldiers have to take a break for their studies or jobs just to get paid scraps. This is all just to fufill the NATO GDP quota of at least 2% of a country 's GDP.
