Mandatory Community Service

The United States should not require citizens to perform one year of community service by the age of 30. Mandatory service would make it unfair to the ones who start successfully early in their lives. People would then have to worry about what would happen if they did not finish their mandatory service before the required age.Like the passage states, " How would the government ensure that each person completes one full year of community service?" Some people have busy schedules and can't afford to stop working or take time off. Others might be struggling and need everyone in the house to support and provide for each other. If people are required to serve for one year, then they need to be paid. People who volunteer to work, …show more content…
People who volunteer to serve for their country, do it because they are honored to, or because they want to, not because they have to. If people are always forced to do community service then they might start to procrastinate or give half-effort. Communtiy service is a good thing. People who volunteer to help others should get aknowledged for what they do. Give credit where credit is due. Volunteer service can also do a lot of good thing for young adults. It teaches work ethic, care and concern, how to follow directives, and responsibility. You also have to make the decision if you want to volunteer or not and making your own decisions is part of being an adult. The United States is a free country where you can do as you choose just as long as you follow the law. People shouldn't be forced to do anything against their will. Large-scale mandatory service is un-American and would do more harm than good. Some people like to help others when they know they are getting nothing in return. There are a lot of experiences and opportunities you can take advantage of before you are 30. If you choose to do community service for one year, then that's one year of your life that your never getting back. It might be for a good cause, but it should be your decision if you want to volunteer or

In the source, The Community Is Their Textbook: Maryland's Experiment with Mandatory Service for Students, by Suzanne Goldsmith, the question of whether or not community service should be required for graduation is examined. Some raise the concern of it politicizes students, as community service can include protests, petition, making signs, etc. For example, students have positioned for a city to paint notices on storm drains, to prevent people from dumping garbage into them. Although a good cause many are concerned about how far it will go. Another argument, specifically made by a student who is filling a lawsuit in protest of the new requirement, says required community service takes the heart and the fun out of community service, to which…

Thomas Jefferson believed that everyone has a duty to fight in America’s wars, which was correct. When our country has been at war, it has been proved that not only the soldiers fighting for America had a role, but also everyone at home had a part to play in it. Although people who were home did not physically fight for our country, they made contributions to help the war effort.…

Volunteering not only helps socially in our communities, but also economically. I believe it helps economically because we could contribute to getting homeless people back in the workforce. In addition, many places that help people in need are more often than not on strict budgets, and I believe if people volunteer than perhaps those locations or agencies wouldn’t have to spend as much money on employees and instead have many rotating volunteers, this could also allow them to use funds for other urgent matters. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, 61.8 million individuals in the United States contributed 8 billion hours of volunteerism in 2008 alone.…

In Serve or Fail, the author, Dave Eggers, brings up the point that community service should be required in colleges. According to Eggers, “college is too long-it should be three years-and even with a full course load and part-time jobs there are many hours in the days and weeks that need killing.” He believes that with all of the free time that students have, they should do something productive and helpful like community service. Additionally, Eggers thinks that if colleges were to require community service, then it would not only improve their working environment, but it would also touch and improve each student. I would agree with Eggers because I have found out that when colleges require community service, it increase their students’ self-efficiency, boost their teamworking skills, and helps them find a sense of responsibility.…

I have completed many hours of community service and I believe that it is my responsibility to involve myself in my community in any way possible. Getting involved in the community helps build a strong character and it teaches certain values that will benefit other communities. Speaking of community improvement, it is also my responsibility to pay any taxes set for me by our state and federal governments. Without taxpayer money, it would be impossible to maintain many of our most precious and crucial government funded organizations. If the American people allowed those organizations to fade away, we would be hurting our country and helping ourselves.…

Many of the organizations that I am involved in, including FFA, 4-H, and LYO, take part in several service projects throughout the year. As a result, I have been involved in multiple community service activities over the course of my high school career, such as taking a week-long mission trip to Nashville, Tennessee this past summer, or just spending an evening during the holiday season Christmas caroling around town. Although some people aren't always willing to give up their time to help others, I believe that an essential aspect of being a member of a community is being willing and able to devote your time to helping others. It helps you develop positive relationships, and it lets the people you're helping know that there are places they can turn to for support. It helps you build up your responsibility, reliability, and work ethic, and it provides community members with a chance to establish lasting connections with one another.…
