Mandatory minimum sentences emerged in early American history as a proactive way to deter violent and rigorous crimes such as homicides, rape, and treason. Mandatory minimum sentences refer to fixed penalties and laws for offenders who commit particular crimes. These federal laws are set by Congress and do not allow judges to impose a sentence lower than what has been established. These sentences served the purpose of diminishing unlimited judge discretion and consequently lead to the limitation and even elimination of judicial discretion in sentencing. For example, an individual caught with or selling 50 grams of crack cocaine will automatically receive a 10-year federal mandatory sentence, regardless if they had no prior convictions or if…

It feels like so long ago when I first began this English course. I can remember being so excited about the class topic, racism and social justice, which I felt that I had a lot of passion for. Little did I know that I would have to gather up even more enthusiasm and passion to be able to continue writing papers about the same topic all semester long. This course has tested my endurance, and at many times my patience, and for that I am thankful because I know in the end, it has made me a better writer. Despite various minor challenges this semester I believe that I have put in the hard work that it takes and I have achieved the course goals and will complete this class feeling fulfilled and accomplished.…

From middle school to my high school, I was failing all my classes due to my incompleteness of my English skills. I always feel like I missed the most important period to learn English, which is the time when you are a baby. Almost 80% of the students in my middle and high school are Chinese. I hang around with my friends which the American-born classmates call them “Fresh of the Boat”. So I keep having non-English conversations between my friends which turned me lazy and I don’t even bother “cheating” on any of those classes and failed them.…

“The solidarity of the family group restricts the expression of purely individual feelings, opinions, and personality.” (Campbell, 102) Due to the focus on the benefit of the family unit, the individuality and human nature of individuals is suppressed by the society in order to keep individuals in their assigned roles; in contrast to this negative form of control, loss of prestige for the family keeps individuals from participating in negative acts such as gambling or putting the families resources at risk “a father who squanders the wealth of his family through gambling or inattention to his duties is despised. If the community discovers that he punishes his wife and children too harshly, or without reason, he will lose prestige.” (Campbell, 103)…
