Mandated Dress Code

We, the student body of West Florence High, declare independence from the FSD1 mandated dress code. The dress code is sexist to women and forces them to hide themselves in order to give the male student body less “distractions” in their learning environment. Protestations against this biased code have existed for decades, and no action has been taken. The dress code creates a stigmatism around women's bodies causing them to be insecure, and does not teach men to respect womankind. To prove this, these facts are true.
They mandate long pants in the sweltering humid heat of summer.
They limit individual expression.
They send students out of their learning environment because of dress code “violations”, which signifies they put a priority on

Lately, I have been pondering on the harsh dress code rules. When did my shoulders become something I should be ashamed of showing? When did it become a secret that girls wear undergarments? Admonishing girls for letting their shoulders or bra straps show is the most ridiculous form of dress code. Dress coding this harshly can promote negative feelings about their bodies, when they already feel bad enough.…

On this side, it is argued that to restrict exposed skin is demeaning to students and teachers alike as it suggests a sexualization which they argue should be punished instead. Freedom of clothing does not disrupt a healthy learning environment and would train students to grow into more open-minded adults who would be able to challenge and change similar unfairness in the workplace. The analysis of the effectiveness of the policies cannot be objectively measured as there is no information from an educational system without such restrictive policies. Instead, as shown by the decline of uniforms, there has been a shift in the cultural ideologies to adopting the less conservative as…

Schools enforcing a dress code on students will hinder them to express themselves who they want to be. For instance, a student who is into superheroes would wear a superman shirt with matching socks. They display the comic in heroes; express the true nerdy side and being a kid who wants to learn. They also can be good in different subject such as art, reading and writing from interest in comics. Or if a girl is into flowers and animals express that they are joyful, bright and cheerful.…

The Supreme Court has found some speech, verbal and nonverbal, is protected. Women hear every day that they are inferior; that they are not as smart, not as strong, not as competent, and not as valid as their male counterparts; which, in turn, promotes the concept of male supremacy. Not only does this constant degradation affect adult women of society, this outright sexism has broadened its horizons; and it’s reaching out to American students. Dress codes are a hot-button issue today; many people oppose them for their contradiction of 1st amendment rights or for conflicts they may cause with religion. However, the question that…

I believe that everyone should be treated equally, but that doesn't always happen. Every year kids age 10-14 decided to go to the final stage from being bullied. Over 4,400 kids die a year from this, either by what they wear, physically being harmed, or what group in society they are labeled in. A lot of kids don't feel confident in what they wear because they are always judged, so I think that schools should make every child follow a uniform dress code, or uniforms. Religion is a huge part of what makes us, us.…
