Mancini was born in born in Cleveland and raised near Pittsburgh, first exposed to the world of music at age 8, his father, made him start learning the piccolo. He later began piano lessons in 1936 at the age of 12. After graduating, he attended the famous Julliard school for music, and later entered the music industry, where he secured the position of pianist and arranger for the ‘Glenn Miller Orchestra’. Come 1952, Mancini was given a small two-week job for the comedy ‘Lost in Alaska’
