Functionalist theory focuses on society being made up of functional parts of a group.Each member of the group has a vital role to play and if just one part does not operate as needed the entire group suffers and is rendered dysfunctional. Every football team around consists of the players and a coach/ multiple coaches. Before Bill Courtney came to Manassas High, it is safe to say that the previous football programs likewise consisted of players and coaches. The difference is that all previous coaches did not function properly, in turn the football program and players suffered because of this. Courtney is proof of functionalist theory due to the fact that when a team has a exceptional coach that goes out of his way for the players, and to have a coach that functions as one should all other parts of the group come into place and in turn can function …show more content…
Some of these advantages are class, income, age and so on. Not just Manassas High, but Manassas as a whole, is plagued with poverty. Manassas suffers greatly due to their poverty and it is very evident. Not just can they not get the football gear that they need, but more importantly they do not get the education they require. This does not just affect the success of the team, it also affects their mentality and mindset about life in general. It is obvious that poverty and financial hardship has greatly disadvantaged Manassas. The football team was atrocious and suffered greatly due to this. This is how it was when Courtney arrived at Manassas. In order for the Manassas football team to be successful Courtney needed to completely transform their mindset. He had to change the way the think and feel. It is highly unlikely that this would be a requirement if Manassas were to be a more financially gifted or even a financially stable school. This explains why the Manassas football program was so unsuccessful and why it was so difficult for Courtney to improve the
