PASSAGE ONE: Managing self to managing others
Fresh graduates or perhaps students who first step into working life will spend their initial few years in the organization as individual contributors. They often apply their technical skill to work as assigned by supervisors. Individual contributors is known as administrators who build their technical skill to the extent that is recognized by managers and peers. The time application concern is working to meet the deadline by setting own time management exercise. They value the work done as expected from the line managers and on timely basis. The term “well done” is what individual contributors are waiting for.

A functional manager is a member of business team and report to business general manager. He is expected to bring difference to the company from what he has contributed in the past. He involves in strategic decision making and responsible for the increase in organization’s profit.
The skill requirements, time applications and work value are brand new areas for improvement as she must learn to listen and seek to absorb information from background related and non-background related team, internally and externally. A functional manager should be mature in her leadership role. Maturity refers to the ability to think about the function from different perspectives. For example, creative design of a new house is a big accomplishment for designing manager, but it is impractical for engineering manager. Effective communication may be difficult and limited as she has to seek conversations from different mindset of people, offices, companies, and countries. There is no clear cut among her direct reports’ accountabilities as the failure of a functions derives from the failure of more than a single department. She has to make a great effort in understanding and managing departments where she has no previous involvements or experiences.
