Throughout history, management theories have evolved and changed as business has evolved and changed. Often times, what works for one organization does not necessarily work for another and vice versa. Because of this, several different understandings of management theories seem not only to be a result of different theorists with varied ideas about management, but also a practical response to managing widely varying organizations. While several theories exist, the one which has been adopted and practiced most often within 20th Air Force, and specifically the ICBM Center for Excellence, is Henri Favol’s administrative theory of management. The ICBM Center for Excellence relies heavily on ones ability to utilize the skills and lessons learned from past practical experience and apply that knowledge moving forward. There can be no wasted experiences, rather each experience is seen as a chance to learn and grow as an individual and as a manager. Understanding that the theory of administration is based off of one’s ability to gain of knowledge as a result of real life experiences, the unit is then able to put into practice the five principle roles of administrative theory which Favol defines as: “to forecast and plan, to organize, to command, to co-ordinate, and to control” (Olum, 2004). The same structure exists within the ICBM Center for Excellence, despite there being several people filling the manager role at any given time. During times when classes are being taught within the unit it is understood that the instructor is responsible for all students in the class. The instructor is responsible for communicating all necessary information and their students report to the instructor if there is an issue. Should this chain of command break down at any point there is always a person in a position above the instructor who can step in and provide the needed leadership. Having this structure allows the unit to run efficiently and allows each person in the unit to feel supported, knowing that they are not working in isolation, but rather within a system that always has someone with greater knowledge and practical
