Mismanagement: Fraudulen Veterans Deserve Health Care

The VA is infamous for misappropriation of funding, which stems from two main sources: management flaws and lack of accountability. One of the most notable incidents of mismanagement causing extreme funding waste is the “$6.1 million” the House Committee on Veterans Affairs found the VA Human Resources Department (HR) wasted on two conferences in Orlando, and of this 6.1 million “$97,906” contributed to frivolous promotional items. The financial heads of the VA failed to keep a watchful eye over the VA HR department, which only lead to the described misappropriation. Furthermore, management flaws lead to an unreasonable increase in conference expenditures. This funding has gone into construction projects that are either overly extravagant for a government facility or costing “$1.5 billion” due to neglectful delays according to the Government Accountability office (Devine). Veterans deserve health care before their condition over take them, but as you will see they are simply not being treated in such a way, as Wyatt Andrews, a reporter with CBS, reveals, in July of 2014 “46,000” veterans “has to wait at least 90 days”. Even though that number is on a downward trend the problem is still fairly prominent, and as previously stated, veterans are dying on waiting, and some are not being reported. Sharon Helman (one of the recipients of the bonuses previously mentioned) had “18 patients die while on secret lists” and despite this finding Helman’s boss Susan Bowers received a bonus (Andrews). Also, the VA must cease its funding waste, as McDonald, Secretary of the Office of Public Affairs, revealed the “the U.S. House has proposed cutting the VA budget by $1.4 billion,” which could pose a issue if the VA does stop become more responsible with their funding
