Delegation is defined as “transferring responsibility for the performance of an activity or task while retaining accountability for the outcome” (Potter et al., 2013, p. 281). Delegation involves the registered nurse asking a person to do something they normally would not be permitted to do (Weiss & Tappen, 2015, p. 104). An assignment on the other hand is directing a person to a task or tasks that they are authorized to do (Weiss & Tappen, 2015, p. 104). By definition, I don’t think that I delegated any tasks during this management experience. I assigned my teammates each a patient and they completed the expected cares for that patient. My teammate prepared a medication record and obtained vital signs for the other patient I gave meds to and passed that information on to me so that I could do any critical assessments prior to administering those medications. In reviewing the other patient’s chart, I noticed that the patient had requested a visit from the hospital’s pastoral contact but had yet to speak with her. I spoke to the assigned nursing student and asked her to make the call to fulfill the patient’s …show more content…
It provided the opportunity to practice prioritization of care, including a medication administration for more than one patient and communication skills. Understanding the different management styles and when to use them will help me to be a more effective manager as I move forward in my career. If I could have changed anything about this experience, I would have liked to have had more patients to care for. I know it is good to work our way up, but to really experience what a nurse does, I think having more patients would have given me the opportunity to do more delegating and managing. Overall, I learned a lot of the experience and feel that everything went well. I look forward to building on what I learned from the
