Management And Henry Fayol's Theory Of 14 Principles Of Management

The Four theoretical concepts or theories discussed in the Text in depth are: Taylor-Scientific Management, Weber’s Bureaucracy Structure, Simon’s Theory on Administrative Behavior and Henri Fayol’s Theory of 14 Principles of Management. Each of the first three has built on the others, as the work environment has changed and modernized over the last century, and also because they were developed in the same country. Fayol’s ideas are from a very different approach, and a very different environment, France in the early 1900’s. Frederick Winslow Taylor was born and lived in an era of mechanical growth and industrialization of the American workforce. As a trained mechanical engineer, he developed and published his theories on creating a more …show more content…
He was from, and therefore published his practical list of instructions, in France, in the French language. This publication did not enter the American market, in English, until 1955, well after all three of the other theories were published. Fayol’s common sense approach to a more human way of managing employees were originally thought of as revolutionary, and therefore less efficient. I personally think that it could have helped lead to the easy going, human approach that then rolled into the 1960’s, and even into the current market. I knew CJ Buck (Chucky, when we were growing up) of Buck Knives, and was always aware of his using this approach when trying to make the lives of his employees better. He added many skylights to the production floor to improve working conditions. When forced to move his company to Idaho, in reaction to California’s negative environment for companies, helped any employee who wanted to relocate to Idaho with Buck Knives, making the transition less financially …show more content…
The Contingency Theory would seem to come from Fayol’s management principles, following those that apply in the situation. The theory is to find a best style for handling the situation at hand. Any true military management will require an autocratic management approach, while a university would embrace a style where everyone involved participated in decisions and solutions. The Systems Theory follows a scientific plan or procedure to manage people, and tends to use Taylor’s Ideas of management for procedures and policies that enhance efficiency. The Chaos Theory is not contributed to by any of the management theories mentioned so far in this paper. Chaos Theory states that everything is moving towards a more complex situation and that planned control can have little to no effect on anything, and the energy expended on trying to secure a situation is wasted

Frederick Winslow Taylor, through a series of observation and experiments intended to find a way to improve efficiency in working. He experimented in a Midvale steel plant, where he registered and deliberated the workers activities and formed an “algorithm” through which maximum productivity could be achieved. And even though the workers complained that this system made them very robot-like, the factory’s efficiency increased rapidly. According to Taylor there is always one method of work which will bring ideal potency. To this date, we still use Taylor’s system not only in industrial manufacturing but also in computers too.…

The military is one of the largest organizations that utilizes the contingency approach because it's an efficient way to address problems. The book outlines one of the reasons to use the contingency approach is because "a particular management practice that worked today, may not work tomorrow"(Kinicki - Fugate 5). Based on my experiences in the United States Navy, I would say this reference sums up my entire Naval career. When you have that many people from different walks of life and serving around the world it isn't possible to manage using static approach to every problem. The benefits from using this tactics in my experience bring about successful missions, effective leadership, positive morale, organized plans, and growth in human/social…

A bureaucracy is a systematic organisational structure that is hierarchical and rigid which focusses on centralised power. This centralised power provides the organisation with the authority to direct and control employees via an autocratic leadership style. Each employee specialises in an area, however, this specialisation can actually de-skill employees. In contrast, a post-bureaucracy employs a horizontal structure with decentralised power which enables employee empowerment (Clegg et al. 2011). This essay will argue that postbureaucracies are better at delivering change and innovation.…

In this essay the two Management theorists I will compare and contrast are Abraham Maslow (1908-1970) and Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856-1915). I will compare and contrast their contributions to the field of management. I chose these two theorists because I felt they made very interesting and significant contributions to the world of management. Although they may be from another era their theories are still relevant and useful in today’s climate. Management is a process, managers use this process to reach or achieve goals.…

These theories guided early managers to better organise their businesses to increase productivity. There are three major classical approaches to management: administrative principles, scientific management and bureaucratic organisation. These approaches assume that people act in a rational manner that is driven mainly by economic concern (Schermerhorn et al. 2014, p.36). That is, people will do whatever is necessary to achieve the greatest personal and financial…
