A managed care plan is a care plan with a network of certain providers, hospitals and labs for a lower cost. Most employers offer managed care plans.
The four basic types of managed care plans are:
HMO (Health Maintenance Organization). When you join an HMO, First choose a primary care doctor. Your doctor provides medical care like annual physicals and hospitalization. You can only be treated by hospitals that accept your plan and you need to have a referral to be seen by a specialist.
PPO (Preferred Provider Organization). A PPO is more adjustable. You can choose any doctor you want and are not limited to a specific network. If the provider you choose happens to take part in your plan the cost will be lower than if the provider is outside the network.
POS (Point of Service). With a POS plan, you will need to decide on an in-network doctor for your care. You might have to pay extra if you leave your network.
