As this generation 's seniors finish their last year of high school and prepare for independence in college, an overwhelming problem is reached. High school and college students are not taught how to properly and effectively manage their time between social life, school or study time, and work time. Most high schools are abandoning the classes that help students learn how to manage time or other necessary life skills. Teachers are always telling their students that, “in college no one will be there to give reminders of due dates or to make sure they are not wasting time doing things irrelevant to what should be focused on.” Some people deal with time exceptionally well while others do not. The students who don 't manage time well in college …show more content…
A person who is proficient in time management is overall happier due to less stress from feeling overwhelmed by the amount of tasks needed to complete. If students have a positive outlook their grades will increase because of focusing better (Misra, Ranjita, and McKean). Grades may increase gradually or immediately depending on how much the student is stressed. Managing time efficiently not only means an improvement of grades, but also an improvement in the workplace. While working on a project of high priority for extended periods of time, one can become stressed and frustrated which can lead to losing interest in the project and doing a subpar job. When a person has other smaller projects to work on that also need completed, which act as a diversion from the main project. The “diversion” projects help to make sure the individual does not get burnt out on the original project, that way the person can stay efficient and focused until they feel the need to switch to a smaller project to lose any building stress or frustration (Lawrence). In the case of most high school and college students, the diversion projects are mostly different types of homework. Lawrence says, “If a student is working on a project for a history class it will benefit them more to switch to a different subject for a break of around 20 minutes and chip away at that assignment, then when the student returns to that assignment they …show more content…
More often than not students waste time by not doing simple things like asking questions if they are confused or by not clearing out their schedule to properly accommodate the workload they have. Keely says that “In high school or in college, most students are too shy to ask questions that would help them answer a problem or better understand the assignment” (Keely). If a student does ask questions and stay motivated, the work will get done faster and with less stress meaning that the student has more time to focus on other tasks or aspects of life. Properly prioritizing tasks is a very crucial part of time management. Keely argues that is is the most important part of time management because focusing on the wrong task will make the student behind. Keely says the environment the student is attempting to do his or her work in is after prioritizing. The workplace can determine if tasks are going to be completed or not. Because each person is different, is it difficult to give an environment that is guaranteed to work for every person who is trying to be more efficient. The College Board, a website ran by college professors, states that, “A work environment should always be very limited on the amount of distractions and be comfortable to the person who is working. Also, if you can work with a classmate while staying on task, we recommend to have one with you” (“8 Ways to Take Control of Your Time”).

Since students are determined to get their work done in time, they would be less distracted; however, most of that focus comes from the increase in stress levels. When college students work the very last minute, they are unable to do their best because of the lack of time. Not only that, “students who crammed study material at the last minute showed poorer long-term retention of the material than those who studied regularly” (Ji Won You). This just proves that this technique may not always be the best option. Therefore, students should complain less and prioritize the extra hours they have to perform their best.…

Most of the time students are not turning in their homework is because they do not understand the topic. The only reason some students are failing is because of unclear assignments. Teachers must take time to explain to their students about what their homework assignment is and how to complete it. They seem to not understand the importance of coming to class on time. Back in high school, if you did not show up to class on time, then you were going to fail. Freshmen college students adore the freedom college provides, by which some professors will not grade them on attendance. A recent survey I performed included 62 Freshmen students at San Francisco State University, in which they were asked, “How often are you late to class?” Three replied “always,” a studious 25 replied “never,” and a whopping 34 declared “sometimes.” Incoming freshmen struggle with the transition from a structured high school life to a wobbly independent college schedule due to the freedom college invokes. New college students are unaware of the consequences of being late to class and the responsibilities they hold with their independent freedom from home.…

More often than not, students have a hard time balancing it all. When it becomes too much to handle, work usually becomes the student’s first priority. Money usually begins to outweigh their schoolwork because they can benefit from the money. They see school as a large expense that is taking all their money, and that is how students rationalize cutting back on classes or dropping out. In other situations work is seen as a distraction because students use the time as another way to socialize instead of focusing on school.…
