I feel the plot of the Hobbit is man versus self. Throughout the book the Baggins side and Took side make Bilbo torn on whether to stay back and be cautious or be the hero (Tolkien 174). First of all, the Took side and the Baggins side, in a way, fought a war over Bilbo. One, when the Took side won, decided if he would go on the adventure or not (Tolkien 18). Bilbo was not a particularly brave hobbit, but he had to use his wits and his bravery on more than one occasion. Such as, when he had to go into the mountain with the dragon inside of it (Tolkien 213). More than anything, when Bilbo gave Bard and the Elvenking the arkenstone it took, probably, the most convincing for him (Tolkien 273).
