The narrator also talks about how he would her the stubborn murmur of his father. This leads me to believe that the narrator did not like his family surroundings and the man in the well was an escape from it. I believe it also had a part in why the boy would leave the man in the well, he was worried that the man might be like his own father. The whole story the man kept asking the question “Do you think it will rain” (Sher 598-601). It makes you believe at first that he is just thirst with him saying its dry down in the well and with him always coughing. Then at the end of the story it reveals that when the narrator goes to bed it began to rain. The children never returned to the well to see what had happened to the man. I believe they were too scared to except the fact that they had let him die or face the man himself after leaving him in the well. I do judge the kinds for never even checking to see if he survived, but I do understand that they were just young and frightened. The question this story leaves me with is what if they never would have revealed their names? Would they have ever let the man out, or just keep him there for their own entertainment. With that said it is really interesting that they never returned after the rain as if they knew what the rain meant. With them knowing it would have drowned the man, it’s crazy they didn’t do something sooner to save the man and themselves from
